Questionable buyer

Your thoughts on a probable scam. If I remember right I saw something similar to this on an Ebay scam here. Anyway, I put the truck up on AutoTrader to sell and got a reply from this guy offering $11,800. One of the weird things is he never asked about the truck. Just offered a price and that was it. After telling him that was good I get the following email back.

How are you today?

I am very sorry for not getting back to you as expected, i was trying to conclude issue of payment with my client. I am delighted to inform you that my client appreciates and commends your vehicle, with full interest, he is willing to carry on with this transaction. I have finalized with my client on the price of your vehicle $11,800 which is the last asking price for your vehicle and its ok by him, I have forwarded your vehicle information including your last mail to him for his proper records.

He also instructed me to inform you that payment will get to you in a US Certified Cashier cheque of $19,450, which is a refund payment of a cancelled order earlier made by my client .Due to company policy this cheque has to be made out in this amount to you,Because company policy only allows a refund payment on one cashier cheque. So you are required to deduct the cost of your vehicle (car) which is $11,800, as soon as payment gets to you and refund balance of $7,650 to the Agent ( our shipper ) for him to be able to offset shipping & tax charges before coming over for pick-up of the vehicle.

After payment has reached you and the balance sent back to the agent ( our shipper ),he will then proceed with his mechanics for the inspection, pick up(of vehicle & signing of title papers), make some cosmetic touches and drive to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my customer's home, while title papers and other necessary documets will be handed over to the agent at the time of pick up.

Please confirm this and forward the following informations;
Names:.......
Address:.......
Phone#:.......

For payment to be made and send to you as soon as possible.I decided to mail it now for urgent purpose. Thanks for yor understanding and anticipated co-operation

Best regards,

Re: Questionable buyer

Who on earth is going to send a cashiers check, for $19,450, made out to you, a total stranger, and expect you to just mail $7650 back to them?
Something very wrong going on there. I'd run as fast as I could.

Re: Questionable buyer

It's a scam do not accept the check. My brother got the same offer and recieved a cashiers check in the mail for $7000.00 for a part that he was selling for $1200.00.He deposited the check in his account and waited to see if it cleared which it did not. What the scammer whats you to do is deposit the check and get the balance of the money right back to them with out waiting for the check to clear. If the check does not clear you have just sent them money from your own account. If I was you I would not even consider this offer.

Re: Questionable buyer

how about telling him to send the check and when and if you get it deposit it and if it bounces, turn him over to the police. as long as he doesn't get anything from you i don't think you can lose anything. just tell the bank that you don't want to deposit it into your account because you suspect it may be a scam. when the check bounces, turn him in. what kinda confuses me is how is someone getting cashiers bank drafts that are no good????? i think what this guy is doing must be is a pretty severe crime. you might even get a reward... :)

maybe the guy is trying to get access to other peoples accounts. that would be a bummer. do you notice the grammar doesn't quite sound like an american or canadian would write? maybe it's similar to one of those email i get that say they will split 75,000,000 bucks if i will just let them put it in my account and give em money up front to pay "expenses" involved in getting the money to me. yea right

Re: Questionable buyer

Get them to send you first a small cash deposit. Say you want to them to send you the cash with a pic of them with their info so you know that they are trustworthy, they'll probably send it to you just to try to prove that they wont scam you... but they will. Once you have the money, then get them to send the cheque, wait for it to clear... it wont, so you will have to cancel the deal but you will get to keep the cash deposit. One way to scam the scammers.

There was a guy online somewhere (I had read his site back when I first heard about these types of scams) he actually got $50 US out of the scammers. He then canceled the deal and there were quite a few nasty emails sent back and forth, which he made into a web-page for all to see.

Re: Questionable buyer

Tell the guy that there is another potential buyer. But you will go ahead and follow thru with the deal if he mails you a small deposit of $100 or $200.00 in cash and have him send it to you. p.o box is better. You might just end up keeping the money. Or he may not e-mail you back.

Ya, definatly ask for it US Funds. If enough people keep doing this they may find that they are losing money instead of making any and finally smarten up a bit, LOL.

Re: Questionable buyer

I had a friend get into the same situation... someone overpaid him with a cashier's check and wanted the balance back. He was suspicious so he told the bank not to deposit the check but just "check it out." Well the bank called him back and told him he needed to come in because there was a problem. When he got to the bank, the FBI was waiting there to question him. He didn't get in trouble obviously, but apparently these scammers are a big deal.

Re: Questionable buyer

That's about what I suspected. Dang scammers.

I was thinking about emailing him back with some questions and see what kind of responses I get. See how long I can drag this out. My biggest question would be why would refund somebody elses money to a person you don't even know. Then expect them to send back some money before any papers are even signed. Saying of course this is legit that is the dumbist thing I've ever heard of.

Les the checks are fake they make them up with fake swift #( same thing as a rounting # for banks) but they make them and try to have you send the balance to them while the check is trying to clear but ends up bouncing.

I work at a bank and we see this at least 1 or 2 times every month or so. but what we and most banks are doing now is putting up to 20 day holds on the checks to make sure that they are real and if they come back we just call the FBI and get the whole story from the customer and try to track down the potential buyer, but most the time they are in a totally different country. It is like a flip flop deal they use it goes to 1 person to another and so on like that.

But most of the checks that we get are from Africa, and Nigeria and places like that.

but do not do it you can acctually contact the local police and tell them what is going on and they can do an investigation on the people, and see if they could be linked to other scams.

Re: Questionable buyer

that site with the emails and pictures that the people try to scam end up getting them to hold the signs was hilarious. some of them are so stupid. like the guy who sent a pictures of the vatican and said it was his church...these people have no fear of the law or any scrupples at all. they call them scam but scum fits just as well.

Re: Questionable buyer

Also, consider that he's Canadian, and you're American. You have almost no legal recourse against this guy. I will NEVER do business with another Canadian because of one time I was scammed by a Canadian on eBay.

I'm not saying that all Canadians are dishonest, untrustworthy stankholes... but this guy was. I just don't want to take any more chances with my hard-earned money. Perhaps PayPal is a better way to go about international transactions.

No offense to anyone is intended, and the smacktard who screwed me over WAS NOT a board member. :D
