The pin that Mike was talking about was a pain in my ass. Mine broke just after the threads and I couldn't get the rest of the pin out. The axle seal is for the US axles. Part numbers are here somewhere. Check Hoods site. If all goes well, 2 hrs...Jim

X10 on doing both seals, once you pull the rear apart its easy enough to slide the other axel out and change that seal as well. You won't want to do it again at a later date. I used National Oil Seal
Part No*710166 for my axel seals and they worked great. I also ordered a replacement axel pin bolt because they almost always strip or break. Other than that get a diff cover gasket and some diff oil and you'll be good to go :tup: it's ashame you're not closer to me, I'd say come on down and we'll put it in my garage up on the lift and we'll knock it out in an hour or so. Just did mine not too long ago so it's still fresh in my mind. It's an easy job unless that locking pin bolt gives you a problem. I'm 2 for 2 with them breaking or stripping. Definitely get a spare as a back up!! They're like $8.

Matt thanks for the info and for the offer. I plan to do this this winter. As for the locking pin bolt any specific part number on that or is that something that is common and they should have it in stock? Did you buy that at advance auto as well? Thanks again and talk soon!

Vinny, Dorman part # 81048. That's the Differential Shaft Lock bolt you will need. Advance lists it but it was on back order when I ordered my stuff so I got it from summit for $2. Hope that helps... If you're bored one weekend drive it down and we'll puut it in my shop. I've got heat and a lift :tup:

This sucks!!! I read over and over what was needed to be done to replace the rear axle seal and I really thought no biggie.....what a joke the differential bolt broke and I have NO dam idea how to take out the broken part. I called a few SYTY guys and thanks for your help by the way but that dam thing is not bugging. Gave up on it for tonight but I need to get this done. What ideas can you guys give me to help. I started drilling in the hole with a small buy without damaging the threads thinking maybe drill it out nope still in there.

WOOHOO Guess who won The dam broken bolt or me with a four pound sledge hammer.................Yes that's right me and the HAMMER, HAHAH. Got that dam thing out last night and NO threads ruined.

I went and spent 75 dollars at home depot on drill bits and other items that i thought would help. The two things that did help were a 12 inch long drill bit 3/16 in size and a sledge hammer. I was able to continue drilling straight with no angle so i wouldn't ruin the threads and a few thousand shots of the sledge hammer to the 3/4 pin. No damage and it worked out. Didn't take to many pictures except for one that i thought was funny. My son cleaning the rear brakes from all the oil and dirt, HAHA!

Yes he was happy as well that he finally got to pull the axles out. I kept telling him im going to need your help and he just kept waiting haha.

Now can you come down here and get the broken bolt out of my catalytic converter flange? :oops:

It's been a long, long time since I dealt with the broken pin bolt fiasco, so I only have a vague recollection of what I did. I believe I drilled a little hole in the case behind the bottom of the pin. Stuck my rubber tip blowgun on the hole and blew the pin out to where I could grab it.

It seems like you've got a real good idea of what's ahead of you but just incase here is a how-to for the 355's. The operation is nearly identical, except for torque specs and a few misc details.

edit* Davep, yea the broken lock screw is a nightmare, especially if it brakes off with threads still inserted. I ended up using a dremel and replace the pinion shaft.

ouch, I've broke a few 6 point sockets on these bolts but not the bolt

Well i either didnt do a good job or the NEW seal wasnt good. I once again have a leak on the drivers side rear axle seal. Should i go ahead with advance auto where i got the new ones from or order from somewhere else? This sucks!!!!

This time, replace the bearing too. Look carefully at the axle where it rides on the bearing. If you can catch your fingernail in the depression, replace the axle. Excessive bearing play will cause leaks.

Sorry Dave but i'm lost here. The axle seal is the part the axle slides into and the bearing is exactly where?

Right behind the seal. All those rollers in a circle. :D

Removing these bearings is a bitch. Before you tear it down, see if you can rent-borrow an "axle bearing puller" from VatoZone or other FLAPS. It almost can't be done without one.

I remember this repair, mostly because it produced your current avatar (which I think is really cool). At the time, I wondered if the bearing should be replaced too, and if the seal-only repair was going to last. Sorry it didn't. But hey, your son gets to do it again. Hopefully you'll have a good time in the shop working on it together.

Right-o. If the bearing and axle have worn sufficiently (they do) then the axle won't be centered in the new seal. The weight of the truck pushes the axle to the top 12:00 position within the seal. There's then a gap, or less compression of the seal lip at 6:00 and you get a leak, even with a new seal.


Here's a pic of an axle. The arrows are pointing to the wear from the bearing. This axle is in very good condition. Sometimes they wear so deep that you can catch your fingernail in the groove. If it's badly worn, you have to replace the axle, bearing, and seal. Or it will leak again.

Just found this thread using the search. I'm in this boat now with my left rear axle seal weeping diff oil all over the back of the drum. I've read through the thread and will definitely be ordering a backup pinion bolt. I'm gonna do both sides because I agree with as long as I got one out, may as well do the other. The only question I had was the bearings; do they really require the special tool to pop out and put the new ones in?

my advice is if your gonna do all this tear down for this . throw some ls1 disc brakes on the rear at the same time . it's a breeze to remove the drum brake components and install the disc brakes . used ls1 / camaro rear brakes are on ebay all day long for $150.00 - $200.00 . my 2cents .

If I had the dead presidents AND the time to do it, trust me...LOL I will say, though, that a disc brake conversion is in my Ty's future.
