Rebuilding Heads

I have a set of bare L35 heads.

(skip to last paragraph if you don't want any fluff)

I think my stock heads have some corrosion in cooling ports. When I did my intake 2 years ago, I notice soem corrosion around intake to head cooling ports. So I was think of swapping them and checking out all mechanical issue (ie cam shaft lift, timing) while I am in their. I am doing this as peace of minds, while I am in their mod.

I was originally thinking about porting them and using 2.02/1.60 valves, but I have been leaning against spending that kind of money on non vortech heads. My goal is to leave them on my stock block with stock cam and 1.6 RR that I already have install. I will eventually use a bigger turbo (p current plan is for a GT35R) When I blow that up or get bored I will build up another short block with Vortech and the ofcourse forged rods pistons, splayed mains, etc.

So I have been thing about just bolting them on with stock sized valves and no port work (it will keep me in lower class for the Nats races calsses which someday I will attend) My L35's don't have any valves. Can I use my stock valve from my LB4's and have a 3/5 angle valve job with those? I was thinking about reusing my stock 49K miles springs, retainers, lock any problem with that, the stock cam (even with 1.6RR) has so little lift and rev so low, I don't see it being an issue. Anything else I should look into for rebuilding the heads? They were already hot tanked and cleaned.

Dave,

I got my L35s from Myclone, who rebuilt them himself.

He used the sotck L35 valves, comp cams high rev springs and retainers.
Had a local shop do a 3 angle valve job and new valve seals.
Pretty sure the guides were still in good shape so they were not replaced.

He also ported and polished the CC chambers and opened up the int and ex ports by hand a little.
Nothing MAJOR, but every little bit helps when you are using a restrictive set of heads.

He can give you a lot more info as he went way over my head when we were discussing heads mods.

I have a decent pdf on rebuilding your own heads if you want me to email it to ya... doh, my home pc is down right now. If you want a copy of it I will send it off as soon as I get it back together. Wtg on a new MB and Cpu.

If you have a chance, I will take the pdf. I am no rush to get out into the garage as it hasn't been above freezing in days. Yesterday it was in the 20's and it didn't feel that bad compare to the near 0 temps it had been earlier in the week.

Without having the heads in my hands I can only guesstimate if they will need guides. That being said if the heads have under 100k and the engine was maintained then there is a good chance guide replacement wont be needed. On the other hand if you slide a valve in the guides about half way and can rock it side to side more than ~1/64" then itd prolly be a good idea to have guides put in.

Youre stock valves should work with no prob as well as the springs/retainers/locks.

If you swap in your old valves then you should really have a valve job done to seat them properly. Youre choice on 3 or 5 angle but generally a 5 angle is desired (no one local to me can do a 5 angle so Im stuck with 3 angle  ).

If you want to do a little work with some cartridge rolls to clean the ports up and gain some flow just blend the area that Im pointing to with the pen in the below pic into the runner and the valve seat. When you have the valve job done just request the machinist put some dyechem/machinists blue in there so can see where the last cut is and youll know where to stop with the die grinder.

Gottcha....I thought that was a pic of a vortec head. Do the L35 heads have the swirl enhancers??
