Removed propshaft now no movement

I removed my front propshaft and now my truck barely moved, and then stopped completely working, we put it back in and now it works fine, the transfercase was completely rebuilt and the last time I removed the truck ran fine, has anyone had this issue?

I think most will ask why you removed the propshaft. I am not 100% sure of the way the tcase works but I know that the truck still drives without it. Just did a 2500 mile trip with no propshaft, shouldnt have but had to.

Maybe your rear differetial is toast? Does the driveshaft spin?

was about to take it to get dyno tuned, all we have around here is a rear wheel dyno

Sounds like reaend problems then. No reason at all thet front would affect the rear. Maybe you only have frontwheel drive?!

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the planetary gears are shot.

:stupid:

If it was the rear-end, you'd know it. My call is transfer-case.

Leave the propshaft in place and pull the driveshaft and see if you're dead in the water again. If so - your transfer-case is acting like an open differential. I don't know enough about the transfer-case to tell you that means it's the planetary - since I could see it being the VC too.

Before everyone starts guessing, AGAIN, Read this thread.Particularly beginning at Post #28.

The answer to this question is in that thread. IF you still don't understand after reading that entire thread (including the "guesses" and bad info), post the questions here. This was gone over just 6 months ago.

This is also a pretty good post. It explains in detail how and why the T-Case acts the way it does.

I was going to wait until you posted (since you've had more dealings with t-cases), Dave... but I figured that the clutch would still transfer movement through it, just not engage the outer shell. (I can see I was wrong though).

So you're saying it's the Front Diff?

Re: Removed propshaft now no movement

I also heard a grind or whining type noise and then the truck wouldnt move at all, i would still drivld still drive on a flat hill very slow but going up any type of slope it went nowhere, i am going to admit i took the transfer case apart after i switched it from my ty to sy because it had a small leak, the viscous clutch only has about 4k on it i bought it new and replaced all seals and the chain, when i was putting the transfer case back together something was wrong because when i turned the output shaft i could heat a slight grinding and rubbing, so i tore it apart again put it back together and the noise stopped, there might still be a issue i missed, i mean its not like it rocket science to put it together, also i think the rear end on the sy is fine never had any issues before

Re: Removed propshaft now no movement

i'm going to pull the transfer case soon, perform the torque test you recommended Dave, I might revert back to my original viscous clutch if this test fails and try driving it without the propshaft again, I thought I was buying a good unit not some cheap chinese junk, I appreciate the quick responses and information, ill be sure to post the results of my findings.

I'll never move my truck but a few feet without the front prop in also! Learned my lesson, even though my tcase was ruined before I got the truck..

I'm assuming I have one of the $300 Chinese clutches, upgraded to a TY rebuilt tranny from a board memory, and its still holding up after a few 1000 miles. Night and day better then my busted ass one. Last owner drove it for a few years with no front prop.
