Removing the roof rack

What's everyone's take on removing the roof rack?

I just picked up another Ty it's 1993 #0465 and it's badly in the need of paint and a little metal work here and there (side/rear window rust strikes again)

I'm considering removing the roof rack as the little accent lines that follow the factory roof lines have some rust under them, and if i'm going to have a bunch of welding done already to fill those holes in get the roof cleaned up, i'm thinking about having the shop go ahead and weld in the holes where the rack is mounted. It would honestly probably cost me more to have the rack replaced or repainted as the little additional work would be.

Now, here's the ethical dilemma. to delete or not?!
these things are pretty damn rare, so it's kind of painful personally to remove a factory option.
I honestly way prefer the looks without it myself

My personal thoughts are that this thing is a 125k mile truck, and personally i'm fine with that, as I bought this thing to drive it, not look at it in the garage, or on a trailer.

Anyway, just curious what the community thinks about it.

are you sure its 93 0465? According to documentation and pictures, it was a factory White/White, CD Player / Non-Rack truck.

Re: Removing the roof rack

it is a white/white, and the rack is exactly the same as my previous one, so I assume it was stock.

i'm 99% sure it is, though I don't have the title on hand right at the moment

Re: Removing the roof rack

I deleted that shit when my truck got all the body work done and all whored up and ready for some hoonigan shinannigan fun. Look great also by the way and I had my guy make some license plate brackets that I believe Renz made a while back so you don't need to drill the bumper if you're in a front stupid license plate state like me. I'll take pics when I get it back. I haven't driven mine since last July as my body guy has had it to do at his leisure and to make it cheaper on the wallet. Good luck with the delete if you do it.

Having the exact same thoughts as conlyn. I'm planning to have the Ty repainted within a year or so and would like to see the rack go at the same time. But should be also able to put it pack if I have second thoughts after all. But probably I'll keep it.

haha, its all good.

Your truck is a Tape Deck / Roof Rack truck, not sure how many were produced like that in White/White, but odds are its not going to be rare enough to matter and like you said, 125k and going to be driven more, my vote is shave it.

My white/white was shaved as before I bought it and it only had 42k on it at the time and was 7 years old.

I will not shave the rack on my Garnet however, in fact I bought 2 more racks so I can mix and match to get all the best looking parts to put back on there, however I will admit that I'm going to ditch the strips that go on the ribs, but they can easily be installed again later, where as the rack requires the riv-nuts and all that jazz. I'm still trying to find a working 93 CD w/ EQ for it as well, since there was no head unit in it when I got it, I only have a spare 93 tape deck :(

0465 was my white/white 93 and it didn't have the rack :) It was stripped and parted out then sold as a bare shell :(

Re: Removing the roof rack

honestly, if I could find a minty rack for the low, i'd probably keep it.
but i'm not going to spend the extra money to refurbish something that's kinda an eyesore to me anyway. it's pretty much bare aluminum across the lateral pieces atm, and idk how well a typical paint would hold up.

I would consider doing a white rack though, if I thought it would keep the paint on it for more than a few months.

and yeah, the accent lines on the ribs are going. they're causing rust issues and look like hell in the first place

Looks like I may end up keeping it.
Ebay score of the year. NOS ftw! Not too super expensive too.
Still gotta get rid of those ugly chrome strips though, they're already rusting in two spots.

If I through with shaving it I'll give you dibs on this thing if you want, I've got about 3 grand worth of fiberglass cladding I plan on purchasing before I put this thing in the paint booth though, so it'll probably be next summer before I know what I'm going to do for certain.
