Replacing a pitman arm

I'm I missing something? I don't see how I can get the pitman arm off my Ty w/o removing the steering box. Everything else seemed streight forward (Tie rods ends, Idler arm etc). The pitman arm has me scratching my head. Anybody have an easy solution?

Yep, take the box out.
You'll need to install a puller on the pitman to remove it from the box. And there is no room for the puller with the box in the truck.

He forgot to add that it is a RPITR.:rotf:

Stab it and steer it

Just curious, why do you need to remove it? The tie rod ball joint comes off with the tie rod. If you're trying to remove the front dif it can be done by removing the steering box bolts and just moving it out of the way. It doesn't move much but it helps.

I've replaced the pitman arms before while leaving the box in the truck.

You still have to unbolt the box from the frame, but it will slide forward enough to get a puller on the arm and replace it. It's tight and you have to hold your tounge the right way, but it saves you from having to mess with the lines and drop the cche.

Re: Replacing a pitman arm

the pitman arm does not have any bushings in it so really the only time it needs to be replaced is when putting the 2wd steering box in.

the 2wd and 4 wd pitmans ARE different.

Good question Don. I'm new to the Typhoon. My TY had a lot of play in th steering so I ordered everything, Mostley out of habit. Once I got the steering apart I found most of the play was in the Idler arm. Thnx for the help. Somebody has to keep me out of trouble.
