roof rack solutions?

anyone done a quick "clean" removal of the roof rack?

meaning taking the roof rack off without welding/soldering/filling the holes and repainting the roof.

Looking for ideas... eventually i'll get the body work done but for now I want to at least take the roof rack frame off... i've read a few posts on the s-series forums and it looks like you can take the rack off and then put the screws back in but they stick up from the roof... Anyone done something like this maybe with shorter screws so they don't stick up from the roof? Obviously i don't want to leave exposed holes either...

I dunno if I would want to be running around with screws sticking out of the roof. And don't know, but would assume that putting screws in would enhance the opportunity for rust to begin/spread from being metal on metal?
Would there be small plugs that could be put in the holes (such as those that were being discussed about in the rear wiper removal)?

they're pretty long those screws, but manageable. Just be careful. If 1 doesn't come out, you can still "re-shoe" the hole and make a thread according to your screws.

Short of welding there is no proper waf, the corners are held on by riv bolts and leave a large hole when removed

yeah i was afraid of that... no idea why they even put roof racks on these trucks. Anyone actually ever use theirs?? I guess maybe if you ski/snowboard or surf a lot it could be useful...

maybe i'll powder coat the roof rack red and put a stripe down the side of my typhoon to make it look like a mini A-Team van.

I can get your roof rack bolts, I plan on keeping mine on but some one stripped out the heads

I just went to the hardware store and picked up some stainless washers and bolts that had the correct thread to remove it on my Blazer. I can add pictures if you would like?

They sell washers, bonded sealing washers I believe they are called, that have a rubber bottom that would seal it up until you get around to doing the welding and body work.

Re: roof rack solutions?

When I bought my Typhoon it had no rack on it, the original owner removed it and put what appeared to be windshield ribbon/sealer in the holes. The only reason anyone noticed is because I would direct there attention to it. Since then I purchased a new one from the GMC dealer in the area and installed it returning it back to original.

The only time I used my rack, was to store my hood while swapping the engine.
I want it off too. I was thinking of using headless screws coated in silicone. http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/300/e3/e3b46524-e1d6-48a5-a1fd-5cf52792382b_300.jpg

Re: roof rack solutions?

Before I removed my rack my dad had strapped all sorts of crap to the roof. Pvc pipe, sheets of plywood and so forth. Its ugly, but it works.

how about the opposite of this idea? as in adding a roof rack to one that does not have it?
