Running rich problem...........help......

my Sy is running rich and the engine light is going on and off due to it. My mechanic (familiar with our trucks) has tried everything, having literally a list of 10+ things checked except replacing the ECM - this is the last resort. Could a faulty ECM cause a rich condition? THE 02 sensor is fine, as is the timing, fuel pressure and vacuum lines. For what its worth, this all started after the install of my 10-1 chip. I have personally tried two rebuilt ECMs with no luck. HELP, we are out of ideas. Even running the stock chip causes a rich condition.

How much for a new E-Prom and ECM?

Thanks :D

So if I understand this correctly.... the truck was running fine stock, and you installed the 10-1 chip, and a 3 bar map sensor?

Then it started running bad, no matter if you had the stock chip w/ 2 bar map installed?

I suggest you try a different stock memcal, see if that makes a difference . Just don't try the 10-1 and 3 bar map until the truck is running good.

You can get a memcal from the dealer or gmpartsdirect....part#16181579 which is delco ID: BBZB1580

Kinda right. My truck was running fine then I installed the 10-1 chip and things started idling strangely. I put the stock set up back in and it still idles poorly with a rich condition. Tried another stock ECM and no difference (with chip or stock). I can't figure this out........help.

The 10-1 chip uses the stock 2 bar map sensor, right?????

I was told by Todd (the chip guy I bought the chip from) that the 10-1 chip doesn't require the 3 bar map sensor.

Who knows the answer to this 100% for sure?

Thanks all!

If Todd told you it was a 2 bar chip - it's a 2 bar chip. He still sells some of those. If it was a 16 in 1, Ultimate display chip - it would be a 3 bar chip.

Did you piggyback the stock chip to the 2 bar chip correctly?

Do you have any codes set?

what about a pinched line at the map sensor? that caused a overly rich condition in my sy before with a stock chip.

just an idea

I don't know what the 10-1 looks like, but I'm sure its easy to install it incorrectly. Make sure you have the pins going into the correct end of the memcal.

Also pull your ecm-b fuse so that the ecm resets everytime you try the chip.

My mechanic tried a brand new three wire 02 sensor (correct part # too) and it made no difference. In fact, the engine ran the same with the 02 sensor unplugged, figure that out.

Maybe it's time to get a new mechanic

Just for clarification, the 10-1 chip uses the stock 2 bar MAP sensor.

I still think that a wire came loose from the ECM connector when you pulled it down. May even have been the O2 sensor wire if removing this sensor made no difference. This situation caused me all kinds of headaches way back when I was pulling my ECM down all the time. Eventually either the wires partially broke off of their pins or the pins got damaged and were not mating properly with the ECM pins. The solution was to first locate the bad wire/pin, buy some replacement pins, resolder the new pin to the suspect wire, and replace back into the connector. Replacing the ECM will not correct it if this is the problem as it is in the wiring harness connector, not the ECM.
