Truck in question is a stock 93 ty with 49,000 miles. Was running great now suddenly it's hard to start and once running it hesitates, stumbles and misses while accelerating....can only make 4-5 pounds of boost. It will cruise smoothly but once gas is applied it struggles. Any ideas of what the problem could be and where to look are appreciated.

From what I hear you saying my vote is ignition. Something is breaking down somewhere. Check cap & rotor first, but my nickel in on the coil. Maybe wires if they're orig. When did you last check the plugs? But if you can check fuel pressure, especially under load, that would be an easy first step like Brandon mentioned.

Could most definitely be a fuel pump issue, my friends i just fixed was just like that, if you don't have fuel pressure gauge pick up a cheap one and install on fuel rail see how long it takes to build. <<most likely>> also while your at it replace the fuel filter if you never have done it yet. Also good ideal to do cap and rotor since they do take quite a beating on our trucks.
We just install 255 ltr pump in his truck now he is safe and has a good pump for future add-ons.

Now how many people hear has had a bad coil, they are not usually the problem???
I see a lot of people changing the coil for no reason at all. :2cents:

I would agree, diagnose first THEN replace. I was only going by his description of the prob AND my experience with a bad GM coil of this type (not SyTy ) and a new MSD coil on my Sy that did exactly what he's describing. Like I and others said, fuel is an obvious and no cost place to start looking.

Hmmm... Another clue. Doesn't change all the above much but brings up the possibility of one or more bad injectors. Get that FP gauge installed (if not already) and check that it holds fuel pres after turning on the key. Fuel pump runs briefly with key on then fuel pres should hold or go down veeeery slowly. If it drops rapidly you've got a leak somewhere. Pull the plugs and look for soot deposits.

weird. same thing happening with me. last night i got my ty back from a shop who did some work on it. it ran so hard. this morning i fire it up and i'm getting the same symptoms. hard idle, hesitatationg, stumble, even died on me. tell me what u find out.

Sorry for the slow response. Yes the check engine light comes on when I start it cold, then it goes off after a couple minutes. It's weird, it starts strong with no problem when cold...idles good but light comes on, then when warm light goes off and runs like total crap and sucks down gas like a full size military hummer. When I try to start it when the engine is even remotely warm it won't start at all unless I completely floor it while turning it over, at that point the truck will shake back and forth a bit and engine will barely stay running (still floored, otherwise it will stall). At this point a black cloud of smoke is spewing from the tailpipe resembling a Kuwait oil field on fire. I have to hold it floored through all this otherwise it will stall...rpm's are real low just barely running. After about 60 seconds the rpm's start to build to where I can let it idle and the smoke clears up. Check engine light never comes on during this process....only when cold and idle is good and strong. When I finally take off after the looong warm-engine-start I really have to feather the gas pedal otherwise it will buck and hesitate and blow a healthy dose of thick black smoke into the poor bastard behind me. It's going to a mechanic Monday...I have no time or patience to work in that shoe-horned engine bay. Out of necessity I had to drive it a couple hundred miles in this poor state of tune....I hope nothing got screwed up too bad while passing all that black smoke through the systems...dalwine250 said:

Old post, the owner sold his truck. I did a tune up on his truck, if I remember right it had the wrong plugs in it, something like AC R44TS.

I am having the same problem with my 92 Ty, Yesterday I got a new full tank of gas, and checked the fuel pressure and seems fine, new plugs. I will check what others are suggesting like the cap and rotor. I have been looking for post on tuning up a stock Ty and where to get the basic tune up parts, I have had this Ty #2131 for over a year now, anybody know any history on this truck? any ideas will help. Thanks
