Wanting my new motor
I was looking up on the 2.8l twin turbo motors and i really like them. I have a 2.8 currently in my S10 and i want to do something different. i wanted the 4.3L turbo, or a small block 350, but i just dont want something thats common. Would a 2.8L be worth my time to build? Comments back please :rotf:

try these places

s-series.org
s-seriesforum.com
s10forum.com
blazinlow.com
mys10.com

and http://60degreev6.com/ <--- deals with only 60* V6.... 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, etc....

They probably know more about the 2.8 than syty'ers would.

Re: Seems bad, but I like the idea

I've seen it done on a 2.8L camaro(but a single turbo). I think he ran 13's with a little spray. Lasted a long time but eventually the engine caught fire. It didnt destroy the car though just the engine. So then he did a 3.1 or 3.4 in it. This time with twins. He went a little faster, then he realized how much time he wasted and went with a carbureted V8 on spray.

True story, my brother eventually bought the car as a rolling chassis. It belonged to a good friend of his.

If you want something uncommon, put in the V8 and turbo it. You'll spend the same amount anyways to turbo the 2.8, then replace it a bunch of times. I went through 5 of those before V8'ing my first blazer and they were all stock.

The 2.8 I had was junk.

And I don't recall there being much for aftermarket parts for them.

Go with something that has been proven reliable.

Most 2.8 are JUNK, There are very few exceptions. Most of them as built only oil the mains for 189* of crankshaft rotation. The crank in all the 2.8s that i have seen (5). 3 broke between Cyl 2 and 3, 1 is past 200,000 miles and still running, the guy changes oil every 2500 miles. The last 1 was in my daughter truck spun the # 3 rod bearing at 179,000 miles. I put a 4.3 in it that had 310,000 miles on it that never burn oil, still has 60psig oil press going down the road and 40 psig at idle. No smoke on start up. I got 22.5 mpg on the road and still has the same compression as the day I pay $500.00 for it with 44,000 miles back in 1992.

Re: Seems bad, but I like the idea

Heres another tip for ya on the 2.8L

My other blazer had one with an OD trans, I drove it to and from chicago weekly for school. (3 hours each way once a week).

I put in a carbureted 350 with 2.02 heads, mild cam, headers, flows, intake, and a TH350. My gas mileage improved with the 350. The 2.8 was floored everywhere I went because it didnt have the power to move down the interstate. When it shifted in OD it lost speed.

DITTO Here's the crank out of my old 1988 2.8 S10:

I was a maintenance nazi and never drove it like I stole it. Swapped it out for a 3.4 out of a camaro and it was a night and day difference. If I ever get another 2.8 in the future, I would swap it out for another 3.4 ASAP. Bottom line is 2.8's ain't all that great. Like my late boss used to say, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"...

Re: Seems bad, but I like the idea

I had a 1985 blazer 2.8 5 speed which i bought to commute to work and it was real clean. Black with red interior. Got it off an older gentlemen that got tired of the 5 speed. Drove it for about two months until it went up for sale. I really figured it out what it really was...........A CRAP, JUNK, GARBAGE design. I had to downshift more times just cruising on the parkway just becasue it wouldnt move out of its own dam way. 5th gear was a waist went in to 5th two seconds later back down to 4th now an incline coming downshift into third.

Go get a 4.3 or 350 what ever the previous people have stated and go from there. I couldnt believe how much it was lacking of power. It felt like it couldnt move its own weight.
