Should I disable my knock sensor?

I get 6-8* of KR at 2500RPM NO BOOST!!! I tried switching chips, same thing. I have tuned and tuned and tuned, my turck is running pig rich with 0 changes in knock. I got under there today to find the heat shield over the DP was loose. I threw it away. The bracket for the IC was unbolted, took the bracket off and tossed it. The heat shield for the spark plugs was rubbing the DP, took it off and cut a piece off and put it back on. I have tried anythign and everything except buying a new Knock Sensor or just turning the damn thing off. I will say my DP is probably hitting the manifold as it is VERY close. I tried to pry on it to bend it out of the wqay but no dice there. Not sure what to do. At 18psi, my KR is @10-12* and the WB is telling me A/FR is in the 9's. I have carnked the fuel up ridiculously. I can hear a rattel coming from somewhere, maybe its the DP, but at 2500 RPM its like clock work, but load of knock. Would it be stupid to turn the knock sensor off til I can get my DP off and fix it, if that s even the problem? Oh yeah one more thing, from time to time, I get a code ESC failure. I feel stupid asking about this cause common sense would say its a bad knock sensor. What does anyone think?

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

ESC means electronic spark control, you are having some issues with your ignition system, get that fixed, get your DP squared away, and then figure out what your knock is. what kind of gas are you running??

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

Ussally KR and no boost is false knock. Is the knock sensor torque down to 18ft-lbs? Have you tried relocating it? False knock can sometime can be triggered by a bad torque converter locking up and I noticed your have transmission issue, so that could be a cause. Rattling fuel lines on the transmssion case, ratlling exhuast & heat shields are other common noises the KS picks up..

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

I run 91. Best we can get here. I never actually torqued it down. I relocated it to the pass side cylinder head bolt hole in the front. Never had much knock before. I was running 19psi with a max of 2-3*. I dont know why I am getting the ESC code. I did notice that every now and then the CEL will come one for a second then go away. This happens maybe once or twice a month and its daily driven. Im sure its a stored code. Doubt its causing my knock. Guess Ill have to take off the DP and put a dimple in it.

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

Did you check to make sure that it's not your fuel lines or tranny lines rubbing/banging anything causing the false knock? I had this problem with the trans lines so the fix for me was replace all the trans hard lines with braided :)

Also I wouldn't disable the knock sensor, i'd pickup a new one and make sure you torque it down to spec like dave suggested.. I remember reading that if it's over tightened it'll be too sensitive although I know in the ford svo crowd disabling the knock sensor is a must when squeezing hp out of the 2.3s

I have braided lines, had for three years now. I also checked fuel lines and they are good to go. Tomorrow the DP comes off and gets a dimple.

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

The ESC code is directly related to the Knock sensor. I bought a replacement one for my wifes truck and it was bad. Started it up and got a code 43right away. Put the old sensor back in and it's been fine ever since.
Now.. if you've located that knock sensor in the head instead of in back of the intake i'd guess you'd get false knock with the valve train being right there. I'd put it back in the stock location. If you were going to re-locate it I'd put it down in the coolant passage of the block. But the stock location would be the safe spot.
It's looking for a resonation in the 60hz range (going off memory here) works on a 5v supply from the ECM. www.syty.org/old/d&e-code43.html try the trouble tree there and info but I'd re-locate that to stock location with old sensor and if that does not work try a new one.
Hope that's helpfull,
Scott~

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

One thing that I do with regularity is raise the cut-on point for ESC detection in the chip. Generally, I like to set it around 2800 rpm if I'm getting "uncurable" false knock under light load. This will make the knock sensor blind to knock under that rpm, but usually you're outside of that range when in good boost anyhow.

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

Ive had the knock sensor in the head for almost a year now and this just started recently. I fixed my downpipe and can still hear a rattle. Im out of options there. Could be the trans but hard to say, it sounds like its coming from the heater area. Anyway, I thik Ill buy a new sensor just incase, hell, its the one that came with the truck and has 190k on it. But if thats not it , Ill definately try Hoods idea.

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

So I may have found my false knock. I got under the truck this morning to check out the flywheel(flexplate). It looked good but as I was turning the convertot to check all the bolts, I noticed something kind of odd. The conv. I have was buiolt locally and is a 9" with an adapter ring bolted to it. The flexplate, has three extra bolt holes for different aps as Im sure we all know. It looks like the adapter ring is set on the extra holes, the metal is kinda raised there to bolt to a convertor. Anyway, it almost looks like its been smacking each other, the ring and the flexplate are a reddish orange color just in that spot. My DP and exhaust manifold looked like that when I saw that they were touching. and they llooked like they had magnetized. Same thing here. If anyone thinks this could be possible, I can take some pics and post them up. TIA.

Have you tried disconnecting the knock sensor and checking your scan tool for knock? I did and discovered the scan tool is still reading knock counts and pulling time under light throttle.

I am note sure of $58 code, but with my TPI Corvette If you disconnected the knock sensor, it pulled a constant 4 degrees of knock retard.

Same is true for the SYTY's

i dont run a knock sensor if your smart about it and watch your wbo2 and use good fuel u will be fine ,but just make sure your on top of things.

Re: Should I disable my knock sensor?

The weird thing is I'm picking up knock with out the knock sensor plugged in.

It seemed to be timing related. Loaded a code59 test bin in and it was gone. Interesting. I compared almost every table and the timing tables were waaay different. Im not much of a timing expert so as soon as I get some timeI am going to play some more with it.
