Should I go for Vortec Heads? Your Opinions will really help!

they need the heads to be put on a jig/test flow bench, so yes the have to boff the motor. with the new code59, you won't need the ultimate.

I am completely in the dark regarding the workings of the new code 59. I was under the impression that all it was was a code that you burn on the Prom that works with the Ultimate chip. I guess I was wrong.

Obviously if the code 59 will work better then the Ultimate, I will have to look into that. But remember, although I want a high performance engine, I do want it to be reliable and streetable.

At least with the Ultimate, I can tune down the engine so it can pass emmissions. Can that be done with the new code 59?

i believe it can be, you just need to burn different proms and select between them. can be whatever you want. hopefully full info will be released soon.

It's just a six said:
You will get the most bennefit from porting the bowl areas (just underneath the valve area) not matching the intake & exhaust ports.
The only reliability problem is if you port too much & get too thin in areas where you can break through water passages.

It has always been my understanding that porting the intake and exhaust is not only an acceptable practice, but recommended. Now I see that it may not be the best option. I understand that if they are over-ported I may have a problem, but for efficiency of the airflow/fuel I thought porting was key. Now I am confused.

Can someone explain this to me before I have MACH start grinding away? Obviously I can be conservative and have them do less porting and if I don't like it have nore done, bu that seems an inefficient (and costsly) proposition.

...there is a good explanation of porting under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_head_porting

It is my view (ie my opinion only), that few people really know how to port heads. If you
talk to great builders, as with Indy Car, CART, or NASCAR for example, porting is a science.
The great ones buy two sets of heads, one to cut in half to see water jacket thicknesses,
and the second ones to port.

Removing too much, and you have turbulence, improper flow, low compression, hot spots/swirling
and possibly head breakage. Too little, and you get nothing or stock flow numbers.
But this is stating the obvious...and I would be asking the guy porting the heads "his"
knowledge/feedback on the subject.

I also know, that having seen two Ty`s with bad intake manifolds (very undetectable
leaks, one from the factory, and one due to the welds/buildup to work on vortecs), that
"weird" things can happen if this isnt "perfectly done".

Lastly, many will say the stock exhaust manifolds are okay with your build
(and I ran them for years on my Ty, with a similar build, turning 12.5s consistently/reliably).
But after looking at extrude honing, and noticing how little advantage vs cost that would
make, went to headers, and show improvement on the dyno. Common sense says
increasing the air into an engine, requires proper exiting as well (to a point, since
some backpressure is needed with our application).

I think the advice you have been given in this thread is good and useful, but equally important
is your trust, relationship, and quallity/reliance with your mechanic and engine builders.
Lots of luck, and let us know how things work out..

Larry

I appreciate your input and that of all that have contributed to this thread. I just got off the phone with my mechanic and we discussed what casting number he should be looking for in the head. I did a search and gave him Captain Morgan's casting # as well as some of the other ones that seem to be popular. He assures me that he is not upset regarding my decision "I just want to make sure you are happy with the final outcome of your engine, if I have to do more work out of pocket, I will do that without any regret". So, yes, I am confident in him and with MACH Development that they will do the proper job.

I hope to bring my truck to the Nats some day once it is completed. Until then. I wil psot some pics once I find out where to contribute some $.

You don't exactly have to donate to post pictures, only attachments. Meaning you can host them somewhere on the net, and post a link to the pictures. Donating allows you to attach a picture directly from your computer to a post you make, essentially skipping over the entire "host it on the net and post a link" part

I know that, but this site has been very helpful to me. If it wasn't around, I would be lost! Amazingly, though I have asked where to send a check,. I am not getting a response! I guess the owners are just making too much money and don;t need any - or having too much fun with their vehicles!
