So, TY got impounded today

So the wife was going to take a shower before we started our day and I decided to head down to hte carwash to wash the TY. Well, on my way down there, a cop pulls up behind me at a light. I usually try to avoid them since my truck is so loud. So the light turns green and Im 500' from the carwash and he kicks on the lights. I pull over and he is hte cop that pulled me over a few months back and gave me an exhaust ticket. The guy was a total duechebag that day, very assumptious. He treated me like a 17 year old kid driving a Civic. So he comes up to my window and says "Mr. Lopez...still havent fixed your muffler I see." So I say no I didnt, he asked me why blah blah blah. Also, I didnt have my current insurance card but I AM insured. So he goes back to write a ticket and another cop pulls up, which is never good. Now keep in mind that I am really a good citizen and do good whenever I get the chance. I try to help people out and I report people that do things like hit and runs, roll thier truck at 3am casue theyre drunk, things liek that. So he comes back about 15 minutes later and makes me sign the ticket and then proceeds to tell me that I need to step out of the vehicle because he is going to impound my truck. I get out and ask them are they impounding it becasue of the muffler or insurance cause if its the insurance I can have my wife bring it buy within 5 minutes. They said it was for both reasons and I told him you know what, I do remember you now, you made au-turn and drove a whole mile just to give me an exhaust ticket. Hes like yep that was me. I asked him that day if guys on Harleys get these tickets and he said yes, a crock btw. So then I say to him this is bs, how many Harleys have you impounded this week?! He says, it really doesnt matter, were taking your truck to the impound if you want it back youll have to go down there and figure out how to get it out. Then he tells me I needed to leave the area now. :rant: Funny thing here is that I really dont mind cops at all, I know they are doing thier job but this guy is a total ****ing cock sucker. Sorry Im pissed about the whole thing. Long story short, Fought with my wife the whole way home on the phone(i walked) cause she was pissed its going to cost money to get it out. She was really just feeling bad cause she knew it was her fault since she took a shower I couldnt use the hose so I had to go to the carwash :lol: . So we went down to the impound and got it out a couple hours later. The lady down there said she had never heard of a car being impounded for no muffler and the guy would NOT wait for my INS card to get there.

Man your truck must be pretty loud. Im like you, I agree with the police and what they do, Im glad they do it... but things like this make you question what motive they really have for some things. Major bummer.

So how much did it cost to get that bad boy out?

That sucks Mike, sorry to here it, I've been in situations like that where a vehical gets impounded. I beat the tow truck to the impound yard and it still cost me a couple hundred dollars to get the car back :roll:

It's not like our trucks are that loud without a muffler anyway, I ran mine for a long time with just it ending at the cat and at the d/p and it's not that loud :roll:

I throw in my :2cents: since I'm a cop. Sounds like a slow dept with nothing really better to do but if you disagree with him next time ask for a supervisior (SGT.) If he refuses which he can't, call 911 or the HQ and ask for a supervisor and explain to him the situation.

Electric cutouts are good, you can close them before cop gets up to the car. Not that a local guy by the name of Jeremy would have ever done that before when he got pulled over for noise. I think the story goes something like cop walking up saying "I don't know what you did but keep it quiet, have a good day!"

I have a really crazy idea, how about you put a muffler on? You're obviously a target for a guy with a hardon for you so take away his excuse, even if it costs you 3.674 hp in the process. Regardless of if he is harassing you or not, you are in the wrong :2cents:

With all the races posted by you in kills and being in not so big of a city you stand out like a sore thumb. There are bound to be a decent amount of off duty cops running around in their POVs and see you race here and there. Sucks but some kid in the riced out weedwhacker exhaust civic is out smiling because that crazy guy blasting around in his Ty is taking the attention off of him.

Profiling sucks.. sad part about it is if you file a harassment report against that cop he'll make sure to inform the others to crack down on you even worse. Been there and done that which is one of the few reason why I sold off my mustangs in favor of a more low key vehicle like the sy. Good luck and i've never heard of a vehicle being impounded for lack of a good muffler :bored:

First off, find a db meter and see if your truck really does violate the local code (if not, fight it and prove it) because unless your truck is real real loud, I bet it doesn't.

Second, check to see if the local code actually allows for impound due to the muffler issue (some statutes require a 1st deg. misdemeanor or an "unsafe" condition to impound).

Third, if it's the ins. only or the story suddenly changes to the ins. being the cause and you are indeed covered, fight that and file the complaint with the D/A and let them know that it does not look good to have officers that are bored, profiling, don't know their own local codes / job in general (especially if you can prove and beat the above) and that "further harassment" may lead to a formal complaint but right now just doing his job correctly would be a start. This guy has taken a personal liking to you and wants to play games so either knuckle under and take it for ever or let him know that you can play the game too.

From one former law enforcement officer to any other, if this type of "police work" is all that you have on your plate to do for the day, with all the real bad and mean things in the world today, look for another line of work with more excitement. :2cents:

but it is a good point that with all the racing you do in a small town theres bound to be repocussions..(sp)

most likely what hapened is you were screwing off, or racing one day, he was off duty,

saw your truck, said to himself...dont worry i'll get that little punk next time im on duty:rant:

so he never caught you "screwing off" agian, so he's looking for the next best thing..your muffler.

in wi the law reads...must meet a body line, must have cat, among others, but thats the main ones

check your local laws online, technically we dont have to have mufflers here.

Yea man fight it. State of CA has a max of 95db's and i am sure your around there. 95dbs is loud. my friends fully open ford f250 diesel with a huge turbo measured out at 95db's. So unless you have a super twin turbo setup and fat cam, you are not "that" loud. Also in CA they wont impound for either of those two reasons, just flag you and make you see a state smog referee. And just give u a fix it ticked on the registration/insurance cards.

Thats too bad....Sometimes, you just cant have anything nice without getting some unwanted attention. Its bad enough you have to deal with the criminal element in society trying to take what we have but when law enforcement chimes in, its just not good all around. You wonder if it matters what you drive sometimes....it the cops are having a bad day, we shouldnt have to have one too. I'll admit, over the years I have lost faith in cops doing their job within the context of the law. I worked for them for many years and it only takes one bad cop to sour the work of the good ones. Sorry to hear that man. Hopefully you find a way to appease this jerk namely getting the exhaust fixed. If he is still bothering you, take the appropriate actions.....We do have rights.

this world is just getting crazy impound a car for a muffler = money...'putting up cameras at red lights=money... hiring all these cops to write tickets= money... the countys dont want their officers out busting crack heads or drug dealers because anyone the county sends to prison the county has to pay for allot of these are young and think they are running something. when really their just tax collectors with hazard pay...

Yeah they flat bedded it. I was gone when the tow truck came but I know because I went back down there in my work truck to get some better instructions of how to gfet it back from the officer and saw it driving away. Taht made me sick to see. Cops were gone too. Im not sure what Im going to do. I have just a pipe from the turbo to the back. I like Jeffs idea and was actually looking into it last night but my only problem is that I dont want it to dump and then have to smell exhaust since you pretty much have to put them under the truck somewhere. Thought about having the dump close off the main exhaust and having it divert to a silencing cone instead. I am going to try and fight it. The impound explained to me that I can go to the court referee and set up a date where me and the cop can argue about it. I understand there are laws for things and I really do follow for the most part but it sucks that not even my own damn truck that I bust my ass for is really mine. Its gotten me thinking, anything can be taken from you at anytime. Nothing is yours.
