Soft Brake Pedal

The ABS has never worked on the Ty. Now the pedal is real soft and if you sit at a light and hold down the pedal it slowly goes to the floor. You have to pump it or eventually the truck starts to creep. Swapped out the master (twice) yesterday and it still does it. Bled the brakes really well a few times. No leaks in the rear wheel cylinders, no brake fluid leaks anywhere. Only thing left that could be the problem is the ABS unit. Any ideas? I'm ordering an ABS bypass kit from Hood but would prefer to keep the ABS unit in the truck if I can because everything else in the truck is stock.

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

Been there done that in the Red Sy

Here is a quicky what we had to do

Bleed brakes starting at P-Side Rear, then D-Side Rea, then P-Side Front and then the D-Side Front. Since we still had the ABS module on the truck it was suggested that we not power bleed the brakes. We opened each bleeder and let it drain out on it's own and then we forced it out the old school way by pushing on the brake pedal. We did that on all four wheels.

Once we did that we took the truck out and did a bunch of extremely hard stops to get the ABS module to cycle.

Then we went back to the shop and repeated the bleading procedure all over again. You would be amazed how much air came out of the rear brakes.

We kept repeating this over and over till there was no air left in the system.

Fairly certain we had to do this at least 5 times. Once it was all complete the pedal was at the very top of the range and it has remained there for the last 2 years.

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

I have heard of an O-ring leaking in the ABS and ruining the electonics. (I don't have any specifics on that one, just read it on the forum) One of the local guys, Ty rearended another car in stop and go traffic when his pedal went to the floor. Its one of the main reasons I deleted my ABS, because it doesn't work either.

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

Seems like a lot of people are going with the ABS delete kit. Probably be a lot less hassle in bleeding the brakes that way.

That was a secondary bonus in my eyes. I just wanted it out of there to free up room under the hood.

If you don't have any air in the ABS system you can bleed them like normal brakes.

that was me, and I can tell you this much gashan -- whatever it is, get it fixed before it gets you in the same kind of mess it got me in. fortunately my accident was at a low speed (10-15 mph) and the damage was minor. complete brake failure is not fun. you hit the pedal and absolutely nothing happens. at even 10-15 mph things fly by pretty quick in a split second. it could have happened in a much worse scenario leaving me (or someone else, like a pedestrian or a baby carriage) wounded or dead.

try replacing your brake booster too... I upgraded my whole system to hydroboost while I was at it.. got most of the parts from carquest pretty cheap, including a raybestos all brand new master cylinder.. the hydroboost was $50 from a junkyard 94 astro had it fully rebuilt for about $125.. works nice

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

I had the same issue.. I was unable to build any boost and pretty much after 1200 rpm the truck would go right thru the brakes as if I wasn't even trying to use em.. this just happened to occur to me the first time I ran my truck at the track.. so no boost or rpm off the line which sucked.. anyway I disconnected the abs unit which then started to throw codes and bled all four wheels three times to get all the air out.. hooked up the abs unit again and more codes so I said f that and to this day it's still disconnected.. havent' had the time to install hood's delete kit yet

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

i'd make sure the rear wheel cylinders arent leaking, then you could adjust the drums up nice and tight also, if everything looks ok.

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

Brakes were bled 3 times by above procedure and no better. Truck stops, but feels sloppy. Put two hundred miles on it Saturday, gave it a few panic stops and rebled the brakes Sunday. No different. Waiting on the ABS bypass kit. Wheel cylinders are not leaking and the rear brakes are adjusted.

I'm having the same soft brake pedal problem with the typhoon.I have checked the following already check valve on the brake booster, wheel cylinders, and bleed brakes already!! The only thing left is the ABS unit, master cylinder, and brake booster.I was just wondering when you installed the ABS delete kit did your soft brake pedal problem go away?

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

Gary hasnt done the install on his truck yet... I was going to do it for him last time I was down there but ran out of time.

I recently put on the ABS delete kit on my Sy and saw a big difference. I had a soft mushy feeling pedal that got much firmer when I was done with the kit. I didnt have any brake probs prior, just a soft feel ever since unplugging the ABS.

Thanks for the info!!! I think i'll just go with the ABS delete kit to see if that helps my problem.

Re: Soft Brake Pedal

I have the soft pedal feel too. Please keep this thread updated so we can all know about the ABS delete. Sometimes when the pedel goes really soft, I get out and take the reservoir cap off, and push the "nipple" back out (so takes up more room) and the pedel feel a lot better. I found that the seal on the cap and the rubber "nipples" leak, and so the air leaks out and there is no "extra" pressure on the fluid. I know it's only a temperary fix, so I'll be happy to know if the ABS delete is the way to go...
