Also, I could've sworn the muncie (M500 / MV500) was in the later trucks and had a single piece case....

You are right the Muncie is a single piece case. I was in a wrecking yard 2 weeks ago and there was a 1989 S-10 blazer with the 4.3 manual trans. This trans was a muncie.

Doing some reseach I found out that the T-5 was only use in the Astro and Safari vans with the 4.3, never in a S-10 pickup. That why I mention the bellhousing thing to you. I still check everything when I go to the wrecking yard, looking for the right bellhousing. This is my problem as well.

Maybe I should just do a T-56 as it would be easier. Just my :2cents: .

Thats weird, I had done some research into and according to a lot of sources the old S10 5 speed was a t-5.... my uncle has a t-5 from an s10 in his '55 Chevy 3100 pickup.
As per directions here http://inliners.org/Jack/t5_page.html
and the tag numbers here also http://www.5speeds.com/t5/

If you will look again at http://inliners.org/Jack/t5_page.html you will find the only use for the T-5 trans in the S-10 were with a 2.8 V6, 2.5 L-4 or the 2.2 diesel. All of these use a diff bellhousing than the 4.3 and that why I said you have to find a bellhousing from a Astro or Safari van. I hope I helped you out as I doing the same thing as you. BTW I have been looking for a bellhousing for 2 years and counting.

Huh, I had not noticed that. Thanks for the heads up  ... I suppose that changes my search a bit. Although, I was also under the impression that the T-5 shared a similar bolt pattern with older GM manulas and they could be interchanged ... maybe we should ask renz, his second Ty has a T-5 in it

I think it does use the same mounting as the older stuff. I have the stuff in the garage to check, but it to cold out there right now. However I want to use the hyd clutch in the swap. And there this.

I had looked at those. According to this site , the T-5 through 1991 (mine is a 1990) used the same bolt pattern and input shaft length as the muncie (350MT). Thus, it would appear that the bellhousing from a fullsize truck would work too, provided it's one with a bolt on bellhousing. I'm converting mine to internal hydraulic clutch using a Howe throwout bearing kit , so manual or hydraulic bellhousing doesn't matter to me

the borg warner t5 is basically a muncie t10 with an overdrive...

at least that is what i was told back on the firebird and camaro boards...

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

Did inventory today, the only parts I am missing are the catback system and clutch parts
2 small setbacks however
1. Trans is actually mechanical speedo right now (easy fix, just mildly irritating)
2. Much bigger irritant. The brand new Vortec marine longblock I bought on ebay seems to have turned into an L35 shortblock in the mail :dunno: :squint: :banghead: ... I have contacted the company that I purchased it from and hopefully this will all be sorted out soon (Their receipt even has the vortec casting numbers on it and they don't match the one I got  )

Aside from that, going to round up the last few parts tomorrow, then I have to go back to school for 3 more finals and I will commence this for real on Weds next week. Hopefully we will have it running and driving before the new year

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

After a long and unsuccessful trip to the boneyard, I have a shifter but not a clutch pedal... dang those are hard to pull out  .... Anyway, going to finals for the first half of this week and then going to try and round up the rest of the parts I need.

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

Alright, 4 hours and $40 later, I have a bell housing ($15 of which was a set of wrenches to get the one that I didn't have :banghead: )

It came out of a 76ish 2500 GMC truck... aluminum casting with the 5 1/8" bearing hole (the tranny is 4 3/4" but I don't think that matters... )

I will hopefully be dry fitting all this stuff tomorrow (as I have no flywheel and the motor is getting swapped)

Also, changing directions on the manifold. It was going to cost more than I wanted to spend to mate the two manifolds, so instead we are taking the old CMPI manifold and drilling it to the vortec pattern. Then doing a lot of porting

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

News: Killed it today. Not anywhere near as exciting as I would have liked.... tons of smoke... truck wouldn't rev past 3500 anyway. Pulled intake and both heads... a lot of crud in the cylinders and heavy carbon buildup, but no damage visible yet. Also, the crankcase was about 45% full with gasoline

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

Update:

Got the old tranny out today. Bellhousing and T-5 are in place. The shifter is going to come through the floor approx. 1/16" behind the original pivot point and about 1 1/2" below, so all will be well with the console location. Have to finish sandblasting the parts, cut the floor, modify the shifter plate and then install it all when I get the flywheel

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

Shifter is now located and installed... after having to weld it when I discovered that shifters are made from hardened steel and shatter when you heat and try to bend them

Will be hopefully installing the pedals and master cylinder today, then modding the console plate to accept the new shift boot.

Re: Sonoma GT 519 - the rebuild saga (picture intense)

Got the pedal bracket sandblasted, figured out exactly how I'm modding the console and got the threads and everything set for the install. Need to finish trimming the hole in the floor and add a front console bracket

No such luck Dave ;) ... I've got enough crazyness on my hands making all these parts go together and look like they belong ... pictures uploading now
