spark plug wires...

Try Me

Hi, Im sure this is a question that has been asked many times before, but oh well...

I was wondering if anyone has a way of protecting the spark plug wires from burning through. It seems I only get a month or two out of a set of wires before they are burnt up. I have a slide-over shielding that doesnt seem to help much.

If n-e-1 has a war-proven method of curing this annoyance i would appreciate the input.

well, time for bed :drinking:

Route them out of the way and secure them to whatever you can find.

I have been known to zip tie a plugwire or two UP and out of the way.

This is the biggest headache on our trucks imho.

Yep, Zip Ties seem to work for me. I have KB headers and recently replaced the wires/cap/rotor (Turns out the cap & rotor were the culprits - old wires were fine). Anyway, I spent about an hour making sure the wires were routed as far away from the headers as possible.

Hey Tom,
I bought Gilbert's used KB Headers. How's that Syclone doing these days? Any new ET's to speak of?

DEI makes boot sheilds that work awesome. they are about 8" long, and slide tight over the boots. i used to have the same problem with my ATR headers, but not anymore.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your replies. I have used the zip tie thing to the max  i must have 20 zip ties on the plug wires, makes it a pain when i need to take them out. I am constantly burning them right above the boots even after i had those atr headers 2000 jet hot coated.

i have seen the dei stuff in summit and am actually placing an order after typing this message. its much cheaper to buy a 25 ft spool of wire, and i guess we will break down and buy the special tool, since im tired of making new wires with a pair of channel locks  . im going to make the wires extra long, and bring them down behind the block and up to the plugs, hopefully keeping them completely away from the headers.

I havent talked to Randy or Ralph in a while. i just put the transmission back in the truck this weekend. turns out i only broke that TCI converter, the tranny wasnt hurt, thank god. I went with ATI since they are right here in Baltimore and ive heard nothing but good things about their stuff. WOW is all i can say. the truck drives awsome (except for the miss from my burnt up wires). That TCI (trouble coming in) never felt right, but now the truck really drives nice. I hope to get my new wires, cap and rotor on, and possible upgrade the turbo (ball bearings :D ) and head out to the track before the years out, so ill keep ya filled in.

That's cool that you're up and running! ::eek:k::

I should've mentioned HOW I routed my wires in my first post. I also ran them down, under the headers (wherever possible), and around the back of the heads, up to the cap. I have KB headers so I think it's a bit easier than ATR's to do this. Seems to be working out very well so far.
