speed pro Timing: initial seting

Where and how is the proper way to set the timming. I see in the manual about the 6* is that with the esc disconnected?

You can set it to whatever you want between 1 and 10 BTDC. Set the distributor base timing just like you would normally. I would set it to 1BTDC, that way you can change the program to 10BTDC and actually remove 9 degrees of timing across the board for your pump gas program.

BG, please tell me if this sounds right.

Basically set the crank offset to whatever you have base in the distributor. It is mainly so that the spark table values are correct.

I don't like changing the base reading, as you are changing timing across the board, for a race program you probably wouldn't simply add 3-7 degrees *everywhere*.

I'd create separate programs, and load them depending on the octane you are running. Your fueling will probably change as well. You could dial some safety aspects in for the street program as well - timing & fueling are safe above 15psi in case of overboost, etc.

Jerry told me a different way. After thinking abou it, its the same thing just sounds easier.

The program I loaded should have about 32* degrees in it in park at about 3500 rpm. He told be to rev it to 3500rpm and set my timming light to 34* adjust dist until 0* is read.

or you could read what timing the program has at 1000rpm, and set it at 1000rpm rather than trying to make yourself deaf underhood 8)

It doesnt matter if its on or out. The tan wire goes nowhere now

Thats what i was thinking, didn't seem to make a difference plugged or unplugged when i set timing so just thought i would ask.

I would like to know why also, i thought the tan wire was for taking out the advance out of the stock ecm and leaving you with initial timing.
With speed pro we look at a certain rpm and set it to what its reading at that rpm, correct? Thats how i have done it .

I don't have the gm manual here at work but I know the tan wire goes to the ign. module. just do a simple test, check your timing with a light with the tan wire connected and then disconnect the wire and you'll see your actual base timing. I set mine at 10degs with the tan wire disconnected and then set my crank reference angle to 10 on speedpro. Then when I connect the tan wire and check it with a light the timing is at whatever I have set on my timing table.

just my .02 worth

It sounded like you meant to leave it disconnected.

I did check it the normal way to set base then I plugged it in and compared it to what the laptop was saying at idle.

You started to scare me for a minute there :-?
