Start them wrenching at a young age

I found a donor for a SYTY replacement motor. Last weekend we pull the motor from the truck. This weekend we tore the motor apart.
This is extra special for me. I lost my dad back in January, and we used some of his tools for the job.

I started my boys out at 11 and 14. They always loved the car shows and swap meets because they understood how it all worked. It is good to have a pal working with you.

Have fun with him.

Looks like his dad doesn't like to get his hands dirty either ;)

I wear the latex gloves sometimes - if I plan pn getting dirty. I hate scrubbing my finger nails - that always seems to be the biggest pain to get clean.

Wade - good to see him starting young. I have a few memories like that with my dad also.

hi wade

you won't believe how fast it comes when they're grown up and go to college and so forth. this is still one of the only things that my guys are still involved in with me. it seems like yesterday i was drivin them to little league, and now they're 27 and 23.

i'm sorry about your losing your dad. i've tried to call you a couple of times but haven't gotten you

stay well and have fun

Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

My fondest memories are of working on cars with my dad when I was young. I remember helping him degree a cam shaft and installing a "new" 455 in his W-30 (which still hasn't seen the road almost 15 years after the fact.)

I probably did more getting in the way, whining or complaining, but I don't remember any of that. I just remember holding stuff when he told me to, loosening up bolts, getting incredibly dirty (much to my mom's dismay) and it was loads of fun.

Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

we have video of me rolling out from under my dads old 53 chevy pickup with wrench and bolt in hand(i was maybe 4-5). mom asked what i was doing and i replied "working on dady's rot rod." of course i wasnt actually doing anything productive or especially helpfull. my dad, brother and i will get together and talk about cars for hours. some of my best memories are of working in the garage and going to car shows.

It's great to pass on the interest. My little boy was bornthis March and he;s already been ou tin the garage watching me wrench. I'm sure he'll jump right in naturally once he's old enough. With members like this these trucks will be around for a long time. I look forward to having my son share the experience like I am.

i cant wait to show my daughter all about the trucks and have her start helping. hopefully, if she takes to it, i'll have an excuse to buy a project syclone to refurb and do a build in which she can learn to respect cars and the privelage to own and drive one.

That is awesome!!! My son is two now and loves to "help" me work on the cars. He mostly runs around and taking my sockets and putting them in everything.. My wife always says stuff to him, but I tell her to calm down... He has been watching me since younger than a year...He would sit in his exersaucer in the door way and "supervise" ...
Enjoy the time.

Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

My son is 4, and my daughter is 7. She started helping me at about 5, she was helping me change the front pads on the Typhoon.

They've both helped jacking up the Typhoon, but after a little bit they get bored.......

But Andrew does help pass me the ratchets and stuff. Can't get them learning about tools too soon.

Re: Start them wrenching at a young age

now this post has truly turned into something important. we have a lot of proud papa's here. and that's the way it should be... :) we have a lot of men who have stepped up to the plate on this thread and revealed their true hearts feelings. i'm proud of all of you. like i said before enjoy it cause it will seem like yesterday as they grow up. hopefully when they want to drive they'll need dad to help pay and maybe even help get a heap running instead of just takin moms car.

you guys look at the pic of the "new" typhoon in my family. i am not the owner, but i am the partial financer. loved helpin cause it was so much fun watchin my kid so happy. a few weeks later and he has probably washed it 100 times. my next shot is at being a grandpa... i plan on totally spoilin the kid :)

My 4 yr old daughter, soon to be 5 is always out there "Dad, give me a job to do."

Usually involves the dust pan or similar, but she loves it all the same.

I had her out there scrapping on the frame one day with a putty knife. She loved it.

When the welder gets turned on though, gotta send her back inside. :(

I love working on the Ty with my dad. It usually ends up with a few select swear words being thrown around (not American Chopper style though). He hates working on my Ty so it is more him giving me a few pointers. We have a good time doing it and I love learning as much as I can from him.

He's already gathering parts for my engine build - block, crank(s), Vortecs. I've never built an engine and he's done a few hundred - although this will be the first turbo app. It'll be a learning experience for both of us. I think he's started taking more pride in my Ty than I do. It's funny listening to him tell his buddies about it.

Ditto. It's fun when you clean up afterword using waterless hand cleaner. "You want me to wash my hands but don't use water?" Sorry if that's only funny to me.

Wife, mom and dad are all coming. This will be m folks first year.

Hopefully you have plans for a room different than last years.

Seeing you in your boxers on the floor, and throwing you the bed spread still hurts the eyes to this day.
