starter issues and the purple wire

Has anyones starter ever gone up before their purple wire was burnt or even affected?

the reason I ask is because I left work today and drove to the store, came out of the store ten minutes later, went to start up my Syclone. click click nothing. kept trying for a while, then got someone to bring me a jump pack. still all i got was click. got it towed to my shop but i wont be able to look at it till monday.

I already replaced the battery a few weeks ago, and I remember checking my purple wire when I was first inspecting the truck a month ago, seemed to be pretty good.

long story short, i have to do some more diagnosing, but if its the starter I would like to just put on a 96 sierra 454 starter, and just save the purple wire by heat wrapping it. I didnt know if anyone had ever had starter problems without the purple wire problem?

Hit the starter with a hammer,then try and start it, sometimes that will work.

The starter in my Syclone and the Typhoon have gone out with no purple wire issues.

i replaced the purple wire and mine always clicked still ... i took the start apart and put some electrical grease inside of it and inside the solenoid.. starts right up now so far.. but i hear people on here and useing the search button they use some kinda forc starter alot..:tup:

I know the instructions are in here somewhere, but did a quick search on "click no start" and didn't come up with anything.
The problem is the purple wire is too small and won't carry enough current to pull in the solenoid on some trucks. I did the hammer trick for a few months myself, it works most of the time. Carry a long rod so you can do it from the top.
The cure is to cut the purple wire and use it to activate a 30 amp 12vdc solenoid (from Radio Shack). Run a heavier wire (12 or 14 gauge?) from the battery or the 12 volt post on the firewall to the NO contacts of the Radio Shack solenoid and directly to the starter solenoid. The purple wire pulls in the solenoid. The solenoid and the heavier wire carry the current.
For me, that has been a permanent fix with no problems now for over 10 years.

This subject must have 9 lives because it has been beat to death at least that many times :lol:. Here's a thread that outlines some of the options to fix it. It can be a VERY annoying problem and dropping some decent coin on a nice new starter will make you feel better. However, my friend and I are both using the same starter that gave us problems eight years ago after addressing the connection issues.

Hey Peter,
I couldn't Help but notice your profile pic. I just put a K&N on my Typhoon today but I put mine over by the oil filter. I took out the stock box and put the K&N on the cross tube where the factory box clamped to. I really want to have it come right off the turbo like you have. I was hoping maybe you could show me a couple more pictures and share your secret of how you got it in there. What size is your filter?

yea i did a lot of searching on here, found out alot of info about the starter and the purple wire, just figured id start the thread to get more specific.

ill be taking a closer look at the truck tommorow so i can figure out what im gonna do.

Sounds like you have an intermittent "open" in the starter brushes or armature. I see this often at my shop, if the tapping test with a hammer works while having someone trying to crank it at that time and it starts, replace the starter motor. Best of luck!

Replaced my starter today, truck started right up. I was planning on wrapping the purple wire up nice and good with some heat wrap or something but when I got in there, it was already well wrapped up. I guess the previous owner might have had their own purple wire problem...

anyway all is well for my Syclone. thanks for the help guys
