Stingray Vette

Other day Im driving around running arrands when I pull up to this ugly , but very clean Corvette Stingray. It was a deep Maroon with Gold stripes :barf: . The guy driving was a big ol ball buster lookin guy with tats and in his BDU's. We pull up to a light and I wqasnt really feeling like racing but he was in the middle lane and a big utility truck to his right. The guy in the utility truck starts barkin about how beautiful the ugly Vette was and starts saying that he wished he had one like htat. So naturally I get in the mood to show this guy what a lame dream he has and ask the Vette owner if he wants to go for it. He says "Are you going to pay for the ticket?" So I reply, "sure if you pay for the pride!" I dont know where that came from but I thought it was pretty good. So I start spoolin up and when we hit green I left him like a bat outta hell. I know he was trying cause I saw him on it but after we got about 100 ft from the intersection he let off and waved bye bye. It was nice.

Re: Stingray Vette

Nice kill. If the paint was well done, gold over maroon/dark red looks great. If I remember correctly, the final Stingrays from the early 80's only had around 200 horsepower. If it was a 60's version, then it's a different story. The 427-equipped Vette's are absolute monsters.

Yup thats true.. I had a 75 vette with the L48 boat anchor...errr. I mean motor and it was 150hp. Total dog. Ripped out the motor and put in a 400hp motor in with a new turbo 400 and 2000 stall. that thing was great on the take (maybe not like a syty) off. I could plant it to the floor and as long as the wheels were straight the ass would squat and just launch. never just smoked the tires. but the 60's with the BB are hella nice.

Re: Stingray Vette

when i here stingray, i think mid sixties, 63-67, even tho some later ones said stingray on the side, i still think of stingrays as the 63-67 models. My dad had one when i was in middle school, convertable 427 4 spd, that thing was fast! Probably why he sold it before i got old enough to drive  . He also jumped one (1963) off a 30ft cliff (gravel pit) at about 125 mph, no top, no seatbelts, liquored up, walked away! A cop clocked him about 2 miles before the crash at 110+, he says he never let out of it till it lost control. He cant swim and just missed landing in the water. Lucky!!!!! Still have parts to that car in the garage as a reminder that corvettes should stay planted to the ground, at least 2 tires anyway. my :2cents:

Re: Stingray Vette

The "Sting Ray" was any Vette made from '63 to '67, while the "Stingray" was any Vette made from '69 to '76 (IIRC). After 1970, the HP went way down on every car, the 454 'Vette being no exception. There is no way that he is making 390 HP with only a carb change. The cams are tiny, and even a 650 cfm carb wouldn't be enough to make that power in that engine. They were only rated at 275 HP in 1973 which, in case anyone cares, was the first year for urathane front bumpers. They still had chrome rear bumpers though, which went away in '74. I could keep going on, but I'm too far off topic anyways

Re: Stingray Vette

The Vettes never went below 190hp with the exception of the California models that had the 180hp 305 in them. Also, there was no early 80's Stingray. This was definately a weak sauce 75 or 6. It had the bubble window or fast back. I had an 80 and I hated when people said nice Stingray!! Ofcourse I wooped up on a few early 70's Stingrays but my car was not stock.

Did it have the bubble rear window? If so it was a '78 or newer.

Re: Stingray Vette

My fault, I couldve sworn it was 76. Anyway, L48 with Stingray emblems I guess. Still, he didnt deserve the props he was getting IMO. And if he did, I deserved more and had to show him why.

Not saying that you didn't deserve more "props", just that as self proclaimed Corvette fan/former owner, you should know your stuff :rotf:

I used to almost be Mr.Corvette Info Guy. Here is some of the HP for L48 (base engine)

75 165 hp, ughh
76 180 hp
77 180 hp
78 185 hp
79 195 hp

78 & 79 were among the heaviest of the C3 'Shark' Corvettes. 80 had approximately 250-300 weight reduction. 75, 78 & 80 305 were among the slowest Vettes since the early 6 cylinder cars and small 265 v8's.

Re: Stingray Vette

Wow, I almost bought a 78 when I was in High School, guess my worked 78 Z-28 was a better choice at the time. (Couldn't get a big enough loan from my parents for a TY at the time)

Well, I am out of practice I guess. I do apologize. Im sure I still know more than the average Vette owner who only knows how to put gas in the thing.

Just busting your balls, I didn't mean to make you cry.

BTW, I found that planetary set I needed. Not through the company you gave me, but from a number that they suggested I call. $50 used

Re: Stingray Vette

Yup. The part was only $15 more than gas would've cost to drive down to pick up the other case from the j/y :rotf:
