Hi was using the search function but dont find anything.
Im wondering if som people made som modifications on the stock intercoolers, maybe built a bigger water-reservoir around?? So that it looks nearly like a stock one but worke more effictive (without water/alcohol)

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

you can get a bigger intercooler but a lot of people go air to air with alky as well. each has it's merits..
I have a bigger intercooler and plan on running alky as well..

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

The stock intercooler is a heat soaking pile of junk. Why would you put an intercooler over the hottest part of the engine bay? Just my opinion.

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

I have a upper upgrade from Atr(bought used from a forum member cause atr is out of business) and a lower upgrade from dutchty and a bigger johnson ic-pump!I must say the difference is big.IC temps before the upgrade were around 130 degf and now around 90degf!

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

So the thing is in switzerland everything has to look stock, otherwise its ilegal!

Im planing to make a big thing, but this has to wait a while.... (then i wanna make everything legal, its possible but pretty expencive) for now i wanna just make som little upgrades, for a good streetsetup.
I have a big air to air intercooler in my garage but its one from ebay, those ones have bad cores......

@Tylex:
The upgrade water radiator looks like a modded air to air intercooler!?!?

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

upgrade your lower heat exchanger or add another one, heat wrap/insulate your upper intercooler, get a better intercooler pump, replace and re-route your stock metal intercooler lines with rubber lines away from heat. and for a couple idea's i've been kicking around get a controllable voltage reducer/regulater so you can set your pump at max efficiency by watchin your iat and adjusting the pump voltage till you get the lowest temp and maybe have someone weld a nipple on the front side of your intercooler so water travels through it and not just in a loop right there where it comes in.

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

Its the same in Austria. But the good thing is that no one knows exactly what is original or not because there arent many around!
A forum member made a gp a year ago or so.Its a costum made air/water intercooler! Here is the thread:
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=55809&page=10

Looks like they reweld a "normal-ebay air2air intercooler". looks like they only put other siedes on where the waterhoses and all plugs welded in...

About the pump, i heraded from a guy from germany he tockt a water-pump from a mercedes wich got a better flow capaticity.

It's just a six

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

The main biggest restriction on the stock intercooler is the intercooler inlet.
Cut it off & step up to a 2.5" inlet. After doing this mod,it will out flow your cylinder heads, which are the next biggest restriction.

Use a thermal blanket wrap around the intercooler (along w/insulation) to prevent heat soak. My temps never get that hot.

I also run the intercooler hoses through my heater core & turn on the A/C to cool it further.

Hopefully I will install my friends ICEE chiller heat exchanger, if I can convince him. to do it.

Does anyone sell a custom cut for syty thermal blankets for the IC's??

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

Could be.This has to answer dutchty. But to me it all looks welded at the same time.
Yeah, maybe from a webasto system. But if you want a good one that fits perfect in the stock location then use this:

@ mister Breth

As Tylex says.
Its all welded at the same time, cause the dimensions of the core are not stock.
look at #44 http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=55809&page=3 there you can see the non stock hights of the core. (small and bigger canal.)
It is indead not a air to water core as stated in the GP cause its mainly a resevoir and has more than enough capacity to cool the water down.
O, yah the above pics was the firts one made.
Breth.
Your just right when the upper intercooler was done that way, that would be stupid.

About the pump from MERCEDES its a Bosch pump.similar like the SYTY's but bigger.

Have you ever thought about about just swapping in the stock IC for inspection and running an Air to Air the rest of the time? Its going to be severly limited if your trying to use a modified stock IC for around 700hp.

Re: Stock intercooler modifications

So you can make it legal, but thats alot of money you need for some "tests". A noise-test, a exhaustgas-test and a dynotest. All those numbers has to be in the swiss toleranz. So that means no loud mufflers, you need a goooood catalyser, no bov, no open air filter, etc, etc. a and btw the power only can be 20% more than the stock power.... But thats the easierst probelm only turn down the boost for the test.

But you see what i mean its a big big thing, and when i do that, then only when i make the big engine-mods, not only for a other intercooler......

PS. Those tests coast around 3500USD (only the tests) and when you failed in one then you have to do it agin. Moste people failed on the exhaust gas test, and thats the moste expencivest.... around 2000USD

Best regards Breth
