stupid question

Stupid question from a newbie. Looking at a non running syclone with possibly bad computer. I'm capable of diagnosing whether or not that really is the case when I get in front of the truck. My question is.....say it is bad. Do sy and Ty use same electronics? Are they like new cars today that will need dealer reprogramming when switching computer?

Re: stupid question

The ECMs are interchangeable from Sy to Ty and they do not need to be programmed. The EPROM (chip) contains the "program".

What makes you think the ECM is bad? What are the symptoms?

Re: stupid question

And rockers, and cabcorners and all the rest of the lower sheet metal since it was floating in salt water. Good luck, it might be a big project, but I hope for you it isn't.

I was thinking about that. Do you think salt water is worse than it being driven in the winter? I guess we will see tomorrow

Re: stupid question

Good luck with that. I hope it's dirt cheap. Also figure all the fluids need drained, tranny, transfer case, diff's, gas tank. Carpet would need to be removed, frame and anything under water would need cleaned .... Lots of things to consider.

Well I was definately changing all fluids. Taking carpets out. I've wired entire vehicles and boats before. Hopefully its not as bad as we are all thinking.

Re: stupid question

I've messed with some water damages vehicles before, but salt water is a whole different ballgame. It could be fixed properly with enough time and money, but the question is how much? Being a cab on frame chassis makes it a lot simpler to go through everything compared to a unibody vehicle. The problem with saltwater compared to a vehicle that's a winter beater is that the water gets into everything, even weatherpack electrical connectors, remember that most of these vehicle sit in the water for at least a day. With all of that being said, if it really only got up to the bottom of the doors, it probably won't be that bad to fix, but you need to personally confirm what he highest water level is by trying to find a waterline on the vehicle that hasn't been cleaned off. If it was a really nice truck beforehand, it might be worth considering, otherwise it's probable not worth messing with unless it's a killer deal.
