Sulphur smell after alky spray?

Got my Snow kit finally installed and my new "Waller 20G" in and plumbed. During the shakedown run, my son says he can smell something like match heads when we come to stop lights (after making sure the alky is engaging).

Sure enough, if we putt-putt, no smell. Get into boost and trip the alky, we get the smell.

Not sure... I'm always associating that smell with a bum cat, and I replaced mine about a month ago. So I'd like to say I'm 99% sure that the cat isn't going out.

I could be wrong but i thought if you spray alky you need to remove your cat?? What you are smelling is the cat. Sounds like your gettin her really hot from the alky? Since it is methanol an methanol is very flamiable, it might be staying in your cat?? Like i said i could be wrong?!

Correct. "rotten egg smell"-sulphur equals good (but not for long) catalyst. Too much total fuel most likely.

So, you're saying somewhere in the fuel tables, there's too much fuel being dumped in? Normally in alky you pull fuel and use alky as the replacement, right?

Also, could it be that the old UR5 @.35 just aren't strong enough? I'm curious, that if they were acceptable before the mods, that they just aren't doing their part in keeping pace with the changes?

I'm doing UR6 @.28 later this week/ (if that helps)

Pull the meth from the tank and fill with distilled water and make a run. You should notice temp drops as good as or better than meth, but it will lean out the WOT AFRs. May take a little time to clean out the cat and get all the old meth out the lines, but eventually you should start to notice the smell recede (if that's the issue).

If it is, and you need to keep the cat (emissions), then you can add a dump pre-cat or play with the meth to try and find an optimal ratio for cat lifespan.

Maybe it would be worth the effort to make a "test pipe" so you can remove the cat for when you are on an off-road closed course test run. It's a typhoon, it's awd. Time to do some off-roading!!1 :tup:

I think this is the direction I'm leaning. Eventually.

I love the alky kit.... just need to chase down some phantom knocks now. Secured the trans lines and bolted the downpipe really tight...now to find out what else is making racket.
