no washers. And a slightly longer collar so the threads protrude through the rocker
Visually mine look like the effective length (above the collar) is already longer than those ARP you pictured.

I am gonna pull one out tonight and take it to the speed shop to check threads, length and see what SBC parts I can pull off the shelf.

L35 heads are stock and "uncut" so they are 3/8" just wasn't sure on the pitch -16 or -24.

So the studs do not include the poly locks as a set, eh.
For some reason I thought they were matched.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

I have a stud out of my old L-35's. If you still need the thread size i can check it.
Also, you definately need longer studs than stockers... the ones that were converted over i the SY are definately longer than stock.

I just got back from the performance shop and according to them the longer studs are needed. I also learned that there is a "narrow body" rocker for our set-up. I am assuming that the typical wide body ones work fine but are there clearance issues for the valve cover bolts? There's $180 difference fromthe wide to narrow ones.

Be 110% sure they are 3/8.

3/8" and 10mm LOOK to the eye to be the same. They are not.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

if you look under the rocker as it sits on your stud...it'll be apparent why you need these other studs...or you could always just slap yours on a lathe and turn them down a bit.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

Yup they are metric.

M10x1.50 on the head side and 3/8-24 on the lock nut side.
The only studs ARP even offers for the 4.3 are 1.595 effective stud length.
there is a BB V8 stud that is slightly longer effective length but has a shorted screw in depth and different lock nut threads.

So wtf is everyone who needs a slightly longer stud doing?

Well it looks like I might just leave my Fn truck at home this year.
1st year out of 8 that I will not have it there. This fn blows large nutz.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

Someone is gonna have a 1 off custom pushrod stud in their toolbox?
Make that 12 of them... lOl

I most certainly don't have time to get the heads re-drilled.

Only other option I see is put the stock rockers and studs back in it and hope those work.

There has got to be soemone else out there running Crane Gold 1.6 rollers on L35 heaeds that has encountered this scenario already...

YES renz I put the rocker base on correctly.
round part to the bottom flat part to the top for the lock to seat against.

I spent 2 hours fumblefuking around with it trying to figure out a way to make it work.
I have 2 scenarios in mind.

1 use a set of ARP washers to space the studs up 1/8", 2 put the stock screw in studs back in, use stock rockers with stocks nuts just to be able to drive it on and off the trailer.

I tried throwing in the towel and giving up but BDubb is coming from ChiTown to work on it this weekend and my wife seriously gave me the verbal assault for even considering breaking my 7 year tradition of being at Nats with a truck.

There are only 2 or 3 people that hold that alumni title. And one of them wont be there this year...

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

You got a part # on them ther' studs?

I believe I have 100-7201.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

One last scenario.....(not that it's a good one) but...
I have a good (not rebuilt) set of L-35's here that will definately work with the stock rockers but I don't see why the stockers won't work on your heads. It'll be more work later swaping them out again but at least we know they will work. Like you said, just off and on the trailer so give the stockers a shot on your heads.

PS... I'm not making the trip east Sunday so I am available for a little wrenching. I should be receiving my rocker/rods set-up in the mail later today so I'll be wrenching in the wee hours of the morning on my own truck. Let me know and I'll do what i can to be there.

i didnt check the number but having gone thru this before if they are the metric m10 x ? for a biglblock chevy they are what you need.

i just looked 135-7201 is what i had used on the old motor.

(just get some jessels and do it right) :)

you need to 2x check the rockers for the stud diameter if you go this route.

and a pushrod checker to get the correct geometry.

i'll be at the shop tomorrow 856-546-8439

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

Well, I got my rockers and rods today. I'll be up very late tonight putting them in. I really hope this solves my knock issues so I canmake some decent passes at NATS. I'm still available for wrenching Sunday if you need me... assuming all goes well with my own wrenching.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

we put ARP washers between the studs and the heads today and oit all looks to be good right now.
Lower intake, water pump adn fuel rail are back, just need to put the ps pump and alt back in hook them and the ECM back up and pressurize the fuel rail.

Its gonna be a long few days before Nats with my busy work schedule, all the BS going on the forums about Nats and finding some wrench time somewhere.
I will seriously be surprised if I don't have a nervous breeakdown before thursday.

Re: Swapping rocker studs - Need more length?

I had the same problem with the studs on my vortec heads and contacted ARP with some measurements and they had some 1 off studs in their bins from a custom job that met my needs. Very expensive though. They will make anything you want for the right price if there were enough call for them they would make them a catalogue item. The other options that were presented to me were to use a hardened washer under the studs I had, get the heads drilled and incerted with standard thread size so you can use standard thread studs or get the 7/16 stud with metric threads but already had the rockers with the 3/8 hole.

I put some stainless washers under mine - no problems at all.
