Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

I've had this truck for a while and now that I've graduated college I have the means to do it right. The truck has never really ran right and while taking it apart we have seen why this may be, whoever went through the engine before I ever got it did very crappy work. The rebuild so far consists of:

Wiseco Pistons (30 over)
Cam from Steve Morris Engines
Eagle H beam rods
Upgraded stock turbo from sportmachines
60lb injectors and chip from Turbo Tweak
RPM 3" exhaust
Sportmachines stock coilovers
Belltech drop leafs
Lots of other stuff but those are the main points.

My goals are to set it up for autocross occasional drag racing and pretty much be a DD when I want to drive it. Here is a good picture of it before the tear down was started.

I am picking up my block from the shop tomorrow and have a few questions having never had an undertaking like this before.

First, what roller rockers should I be looking into? The machinist said to get adjustable and I had planned on a 1.5 ratio.

Second, I'm going to have the transmission gone through to make sure it will handle the additional power. Will I need a new torque converter for this setup?

Lastly, I know to tell the transmission shop not to touch the valve bodies of the trans, what else should I be informing him of in regards to it?

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

It probably didn't run right because of the rigged up electric fan wiring. Thanks a lot Rodney Bird

Ha that's long gone. But when I took a valve cover off one of the studs was broke off Also there's been metal shavings everywhere.

I'd run with a ported and polished set of L35 heads at least. Have screw-in rocker studs installed. As far as Rocker Arm Ratio, stick with 1.5. 1.6 Ratio adds increased stress on the valvetrain and generally are only needed when you are not changing camshafts and want the extra lift. Rocker arm brand is in the air. mostly personal preference. Crane Gold rocker arms used to be THE rocker arm to run but I cant be sure they are the same since Crane went bankrupt.

You could go with Vortec heads. I know where a really nice set of low mile ones are sitting right now. ;)

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

I've already got L35 heads. Picked up everything at the machine shop last night.

Does anyone know the part number or the ARP head studs I need?

Does anyone know if you need to use the setback plates with belltech drop leafs?

It looks like our a/c lines are different that regular s series, does anyone know where to get stock fitting a/c lines?

RE rockers. Steve should have told you what the cam is ground for. Give him a call. Once lift at the valve is known be sure to check for spring bind. Steve can probably help there also. I'm just not sure what his policy's are. Definitely screw-in studs and adjustable rockers. IMHO with a custom cam you MUST degree the cam. The cam card will have the specs. Did Steve spec new followers? HD push-rods?

Did the machinist convert the 2 center mains to 4 bolt? If not you might consider that. If it's not to late don't use the stepped caps.

Head bolts are the same as a SB Chev. You'll just have extras. I suspect that ARP makes a V6 kit but don't know. Most rocker co's will sell you a V6 kit. Use an ARP main bearing kit (studs and nuts) also.

Cometic head gaskets would be a good choice also. Make sure the machinist has finished the block and heads to Cometic specs.

Are you having it balanced? Always a good plan. Be sure to include the front damper and flex plate. Make sure the shop has even fire V6 bob weights.

All my :2cents:

Thanks for the response Don! I am actually hoping mine will run something like yours does right now. I have made sure all of your suggestions have already been taken care of.

Orher than a few odds and ends I have everything to build the engine which will be going together next week and back in the truck next weekend.

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

No problem. You asked about rockers and I kinda got carried away. Have fun with the build.

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

I talked to the guy doing my transmission yesterday and its rebuilt. He said when o dropped it off most everything in it was broken and didn't see how it could possibly be driving.

This truck was a giant POS when I got it...

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

Got to reading Morgan's thread about his bet with Jimmy so I looked at my block while its out.
Is this supposed to be the VIN?

Looks to me like it says CHB22752 which is not a syclone correct?

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

Thats an interesting compressor wheel on that turbo.
I dont think I have seen one like that.
Yeah dont be surprised about the block. These trucks have been around long enough to have gotten different engines. I thought mine was all original when I got it. Turns out my sy had a Typhoon VIN on the block.

Re: Sy#1524 rebuild/restore

Haven't really updated this much but a lot of progress has been made. The engine is in and hopefully everything will be sorted out and good to go for shindig. The truck still needs a good ammount of work but its slowly getting to where I really want it to be.

A few issues that are left:
rear shocks are still original I believe
theres a slight vibration at around 3000 RPM's
and mobviously decide on paint finally
