Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

congrats on your journey. still doesnt mean they are all reliable.

I've driven mine 1200 miles each way (2400 miles round trip, plus racing) to SyTy Nationals 3 years in a row, but it still isnt anywhere near the most reliable vehicle Ive owned.

No doubt the new owner will start a thread asking about a noise or rattle... :rotf:

Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

I drove mine 1300 miles the day I bought it. It only started to get hot about 10 hours into the trip when I decided to get into boost quite a bit ;) ---

Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

Ive driven my Sy to KC and back twice (plus racing), its been all over FL to meets.... would I always trust it to jump in and go? No...but thats because its modded.

My ex royal blue I daily drove from the day I bought it till I sold it. For a 3 month period, I drove it around 200 miles per day, 5 days a week. That truck gave me zero problems. I did all the routine maintanence and upgrade mods (fuel pump, IC lines, etc) and kept it clean.

In these trucks, reliability is closely related to how you use your right foot.

Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

I've owned my truck for over eight years now and never had a problem with it until two weeks ago... no boost issue which im still trying ti figure out but the first year I owned it I daily drove it and loved every minute of it.

cheap
reliable
fast

you can only have 2 of the above :)

I've owned a few fox body mustangs and all three of those listed applied to each one :)

Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

My old truck went from Nebraska to california no problem. Then I sold it 3 years later and the new owner drove it straight from California to North Carolina.

Did he take it off the trailer at either end?

Oh don't get me started....:rotf: I bought my Ty in 2005 with about 65k on her. She now has about 70k. All I can say is they will run when they want to run but when they don't, stand by! My Ty might get me there but wont get me back. But then again, it could have been my fault for not really research the truck and its previous owner. Back to stock she does run great however. Problems just come out of nowhere plenty of times....In fact, looking for a good mechanic in NJ.....Captain Morgan, are you busy?

Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

I would drive my Sy or Ty anywhere, anytime. My Ty was built to be a long distance tourer. It has 145+k on it and the only part ever changed was the transfer case due to an occasional skip inside. Stock truck with suspension and brake upgrades and all of the modern electronic toys.

The Sy I try to keep the miles off but it has over 400 passes at the track and maybe a few more on the street. It did have tranny problems year ago but they were all ironed out and it has been perfect since. Runs into the 12's with relatively mild mods and a decent tune.

All I do is routine maintainance and check everything over before I hit the road. My Toyota Celica has given me more trouble in the last few months than all the other cars combined.

and mine is just the opposite  I went 201,000 miles on the original cap, rotor, plugs and wires before I was finally forced to change them out :D I'm still running the original wires though

Mine has been a daily driver for years, even caught the a few eyes because it see's some winter driving. The old saying is true if you aint breakin it you aint racing it. I usually upgrade when I hurt or break something. The right foot will keep you broke.

My avatar pic is courtesy of

LES SCHWAB TIRES in LIVERMORE.

After a $400 tow bill I ended up having to swap out the hub so buyer could drive it home the same day. Got off the freeway with a single wheel stud holding things together. Buyer was with me when it broke and still purchased the truck. :) Talk about a leap of faith.

His first ride with me the Sy broke, and his second was in the tow truck :rotf: But other then LES Shwab effing things up, that truck ran like a champ.

Re: Sy Ty not a Reliable my.....

I drove my white one daily for 5 years before I traded it in. I had over 200,000 miles on it when I traded it in on a Black/Black Ty that had 14K miles. I have had more problems with the low mileage Ty than I ever did with my White one. It is just luck of the draw and what other owners have done to them. If they aren't moded other than the Reliability mods, they are fairly reliable like any other Jimmy. Once you mod it, then all bets are out the window.
