Sy/ Ty reliablity

Hey guys... I have been pouring over this site for a couple of weeks, asking a lot of questions, reading a tonne of threads etc...

After reading a lot of the threads... where many of the posters mention problems etc... I have a couple questions..

Are these trucks very unreliable? Do they break down more than the average truck/ car??

I realize when they do break down, they can be troublesome right? because parts are scarce? just how hard is it to get parts?

I've read that the driveline componenets fail often... can these be found and replaced easily?

why do so many sy/ty's seem to have had the engine rebuilt in them???

anyways, i would appreciate anyone's response in regards to me being a future buyer... i'd like to drive it 3-4 times a week, put 100k or so a week on it...

will i find a sy for sale in okay shape for 10 000? or will i need to spend closer to 15 000. I don't need a mint one, but I don't want one that has seen much better days and has been unloved.

thanks again guys for any replies.

yes, they can be unreliable, if you don't take care of them. remember they are 15yrs old and stuff fails.

yes the can be troublesome, all the parts you need are available thru the site vendors. engine/mechanical parts aren't that scarce, its the cladding that is alot of money.

one phrase "Prime Gears/JS Manufacturing 4L80E conversion" and be done with it.

people get greedy with boost and don't properly maintain them, datamaster is the key here and did i mention they are 15yrs. old.

you can definately find a nice one for 10K, but remeber owning one of these requires lots of hands on work from the owner, local shops just don't know how to work on these trucks. HTH:tup:

Re: Sy/ Ty reliablity

the reason these trucks are labeled or heard of as unreliable is because most ( not all of us ) but most who own them beat the shit out of them and they are not properly tuned. if they are not tuned correftly they will detonate( which means motor ) trannies go ( from boosted launches ) if you drive it like you have some sense and keep it maintained it should give you good service. as with all performance vehicles you are going to have issues at some point, no matter what you drive. it all depends on how much you beat on it.

couldnt have said it better.

Honestly, can you name a performance vehicle that has 100% reliablity rate? Neglect will basically destroy any vehicle. A stock motor with give or take 100k miles is not going to perform 100% in any condition, and nearly all performance vehicles with a little age either need or have a rebuilt engine.

Just remember when you get serious about buying one that you get what you pay for. You should be able to find a well maintained Sy with 80-100,000 miles on it for $10,000 to $13,500 range. Remember the adage you get what you pay for. A truck priced initially at $6-8,000 will end up normally setting you back another $5-7,000 to get it right. Save yourself the potentially required labor and headaches after the sale and buy a nice documented driver up front.

I think a lot of engines are rebuilt bigger and better b/c as its was mentioned above people throw on mods w/o tuning and beat the sh!t out of em' (like myself), and then when they finally do blow the motor, they build it so it wont happen again (hopefully). The other scenario would be someone start with a couple of mods and it becomes addictive and snowballs into a fully built motor.

100k a week???? do you drive around the world alot or what

The issue with the motor being rebuilt is the factory motors internals were totally under built. They are OK if tuned, but stock motor driven hard with an untuned motor (vacuum leak/weak FP) is a recipe for a rebuilt. Add in a few mods, more boost and untuned mistake window becomes very small.

The front propshaft and transmission are also under sized for boosted launches.

no no, like 100 kilometers or 60 miles per week. not 100 000 or 60 000. a little cruise here and there etc..

when you guys mention "tuned" .. what exactly does this mean ... tuned as in everything running in sync, nothing overboosting .., good fuel flow, timing etc..???

also, have most guys broke the propshaft and axles etc??? and are the expensive and hard to replace?

When you find one, get one with a top quality paint job so you can stay away from the dreaded paint peel. If not plan on doing a paint job yourself and use a clear coat finish.

i totally agree with chris 100 percent they are no more of a problem than anything else out there ,i have never had most of the problems some talk about ,like he said most bring the problems on themselves,

Since you're from Canada you have a good shop/ tuner right here,
Campbell Automotive/ Nolan N. talk to them

As long as the trucks are tuned and in good shape they run fine,
Mark drives his Ty all the time, Gord drives his Sy to work, Barb (Nolan's wife) drives Baby Ty all the time (it is/ was a daily driver), Jeff from BC drives his Sy to Edmonton for the Nats

My syclone is built up by Nolan and Tony) and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere even though it's just pretty much just a weekend/ days off toy. I blew my tranny last year but with 500hp to the ground and me not driving it like a grandma it wasn't that much of a shock.

Take a look at the trucks, ask questions and if you get one make sure you get someone who knows these truck to look at it before and after the purchase and keep up on any maintenance.

Indeed!! I didn't buy a lemon b/c of one of the guys here. Listen to what we are saying and if you are in Canada, Campbell is your answer.
