Syclone Astro running fault

Re: Syclone Astro running fault

Thanks for the pointers, I will look into them all. I hope to have some service parts soon so that should eliminate some ideas but I must admit, it isn't just a bit of overfueling, it's loads as the fumes and dark smoke are very bad until the service light kicks in.

maybe pick up a new fuel pressure regulator from hood as well. they are like 12 dollars.

Re: Syclone Astro running fault

Just a quick update and a request for more help please.
Mike hood sent me very quickly the service parts that I needed ( Thanks ) and I have now fitted the following...............................plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor, o2 sensor, TPS, MAP, IAC, engine temp sensor, coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor, PCV vac, PCV boost and a fuel pressure regulator.

It had been overfuelling as when I drained the oil, it had quite a bit of petrol mixed in it.Changing the service parts seemed to sort out the starting problem and when the IAC was changed the idle was where it should be and the service light no longer comes on which is great.
My problem now is that before when the service light came on it would boost well and accellerate and now it wont. The engine runs far better now and is nice to drive round town, the idle is about the right revs but does fluctuate up and down a bit. But when you actually want some good performance you can here it boosting but appears to hold back with slight surges now and then as if its missing or not adding enough fuel. This problem seems to be worse if your foots to the floor rather than 3 quarter down.
I have not checked if I have the right PCV in the right place, what difference is there between the vac and boost PCV as they look identical and would it give me this problem?

Has anyone had this type of problem and is it a common thing?

Boost Leak some where my Guess, I would Double Check all your Conections and the Vacume lines one more time. Yo can never me to sure with these things.

Grab a scantool (DM or otherwise) and check the spark retard while in boost. It could be that you're getting enough retard to make it fall on it's face (usu the case when 3/4 throttle feels faster than full throttle). Also, you could be overboosting and the ecm is cutting your boost back and then reallowing it (a "boost surge".)

The only way to be sure is to scan it, but try hooking the turbo up with base boost (run vac line from compressor housing directly to wastegate) and see if the problem persists.

Re: Syclone Astro running fault

Well i have had a play today with the limited resources that I have. The trouble I have is that this engine should not be in this Astro so I dont know what should be where but all I do know is that with the service light on, it went much better.
I drove it again today and I would better describe the problem as very little accelleration when you can hear it boosting regardles of partial or full throttle.
I have checked the boost hoses and all looks well, traced all the vac pipes and they seem good. even put the old fuel pressure reg back on just in case it was that and made no difference, Also moved the distributor a degree or two to see if that helped with the fluctuating idle speed, but no.
When I hooked it up with base boost it drove exactly the same, even drived the same with no vac pipe to the actuator.
I dont think I am over boosting as I dont realy have a point that even feels like it has got good accelleration before hitting overboost limit which is what I would have expected.

I have decided to fit a whole range of guages so that I know what the engine and ancillaries are doing but in the meantime, any more suggestions would be great as I am very frustrated as I want to see what it can do.

Thanks
