Syclone in surgery

Re: Syclone in surgery

Any updates on this Shaun?

Purrs like a kitten. I cannot believe how smooth yet crisp it shifts. Was holding back responding until I have sufficient time to prove it but I have driven it 3 times in the last three weeks and it runs absolutely flawless. I do need to fine tune some richness out of it (fuel management system issue....not an RPM tranny fix issue) but it sure feels great to have it back. RPM is first class.....you guys don't hesitate to go there IF you want it done right. Yes, it will cost you but I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I am VERY satisified up to this point!!

Thanks Shaun. This is not Sy/Ty related or Corvette related but I'm stoked anyway. Lingenfelter just put thier 2010 Camaro SS in the 8's today. The combo is a LS9 (original engine from my ZR1) with a 2 stage of nitrous and a TR6060 6 speed manual trans built by RPM ! Race weight is 4300lbs !

Re: Syclone in surgery

I have been planning on going to a 4l80e but after talking to RPM on the phone (I spoke to TJ) they are getting me more and more sold on the level 6 4l60e. I read through this post and it answered a lot of my questions but I figured it would be good to follow up with those who have done the 4l60e. How are your trannys doing after you have had some time to put more miles and 1/4 mile passes on them?
Thanks

The "engine miss" turned out to be a plug wire melted against the header. Jeff Scott tickled the truck and I cannot believe how well it runs now. Throughout the process, the 4L60E continued to provide a smile on my face. I like it so well, I am seriously considering paying RPM to put a 4L60E in my my other truck; that should tell ya something :). Great folks....great trannies!!

Re: Syclone in surgery

I’ll throw my 2 cents in. Had RPM do a 4L60 for my Ty back in November. I meant to post up about it, but the truck was tucked away for the winter months and I really didn’t think about it. Been driving it some though since the weather warmed up and I love it. Truck runs smooth, shifts are firm, pedal is effortless now with no resistance from a TV cable. I have no quarter mile times yet, don’t know when I’ll get a chance to make it to the track. Overall I’m very satisfied with the way it has performed so far.

And let me say that the service from RPM has been top-notch as well. When Rodney took me out on the initial test drive, we blew an IC hose off. When I told him that several of the pipes had no beads on the ends, he offered to have one of his guys bead-roll my pipes for free. It’s something I’d wanted to do for a while, but pipe-beaders aren’t exactly cheap…so anyway, I pulled my pipes when we got back to the shop and his guy bead-rolled them right there. Awesome!

I did have an issue with my new converter on the way home. About 30 mins into the drive, it stopped locking up. Took it back to RPM, Rodney hooked up the laptop and verified that the converter was not locking when commanded. He knew I drove a long way and offered to fix the problem and deliver the truck to my house. They pulled and cleaned the trans and installed another new converter. Several days later one of his guys showed up at my house with my Ty safely on a trailer. I live over 3 HOURS from their shop. It sucked that the new converter dumped, but for them to take the time to bring the truck all the way to my door….I don’t think most places would offer that.

Finally, I’ve been dealing with TJ in the RPM office as well, bugging him with questions about a trans for my other truck. It’s not an RPM trans, but he still takes the time to answer me every time. Very cool to do that.

So in a nutshell, if you’re thinking about taking your truck there, go for it. Have them install it, program it, and forget about it.

Re: Syclone in surgery

Coming up on 10 months now. Truck has torn up some asphalt, in addition to some nicely modded vehicles and has never even hinted at missing a beat. Remains undefeated and headed for the track in August to see if it will qualify for BG status. Stay tuned.....

Re: Syclone in surgery

I am thinking really seriously about doing this instead of using a 4L80. I was trying to sell onie of my cars to pay for the conversion, but this seems to be a cheaper, easier route that should hold up to what we will be doing with the truck. $3900 including everything but transportation to Indiana looks to be a great deal.

Re: Syclone in surgery

Shaun did you ever run it?

No. I took it out a month ago and it is resistant to build boost on the line. Once I begin to roll, it spools very strong and then you just have to hold on for dear life. Haven't had time to diagnose the issue but I need a great 60 foot time to join the club. Also need to add the MSD ignition to it and the boost controller but that is 1/2 a days work. Finding 1/2 a day has been a challenge ;).

On top of that, I have been working virtually every single day on the Aspen. Once I post pics, you will see why it has taken so long. Each bolt on the front end received special attention but it has been worth it.

Targeting early October to run the Sy if the Ty fires up next week. Might just use it to get in the club cause it is very strong. Any idea's to cure boost in the hole for the Sy?

Re: Syclone in surgery

Ive been watching this post for a while. I know there are some that have went the 4l60 route to save a buck.I like that about the 60e too. But Im still waiting to see what the reliability of a 60 is. Its great that it shifts nice and firm and the drive ability is good. So did my 700r4 before it blew up. I guess what im saying is lets see some 10 sec back to back runs and sub 1.6 60 foot times on drag radials or slicks then you will have your answer. Driving it around on the street isnt going to kill a 60e even in stock form. My 80e has over 300 passes on most in the 10s! Plus endless amount of awd burnouts and ive never had it out of the truck since i put it in. Thats reliability ! can the 4l60 measure up to that Im still waiting for a verdict.

Well the tranny is still performing flawlessly but my motor sustained a slightly bent connecting rod (at least that is the pre-teardown determination of the engine shop) :(. Fresh build getting dropped in @ mid March with about 90+ more HP than the current 515 so the saga continues, however NO tranny failure yet. Fluid is crystal clean. Pretty sure a 6.67 1/8 puts me in the 10 sec range for the 1/4 but a future run at Bowling Green will remove all doubt.
