I don't like the idea at all. I wouldn't drive 50 miles to see any nationals other than the sy/ty nationals. Mix us in with a bunch of extreme's and regular s-10's and it'd be just like having a Z-11 Camaro parked next to an RS 350.

good points jimmy...

i guess the reason why i brought this up is cause i feel that the syty nats just doesnt get as much attention and enthusiasm from everyone as it did in the first 2-3 years. I remember seeing emails daily on what to expect and getting everyone pumped up to go... afterwards, i was cleaning email for days after the event with everyone posting about the ongoings..

im all about the syty only events...but at the same time, as Da Chia said (hes from S-Series if you didnt catch on), we all are still from the same "bloodline" and i can respect and still have fun hanging out with the bling bling machines (not you chia).

everyone has their own reasons for attending... some for racing, others for hanging out and catching a sun tan from the bling and getting drunk with friends and finding yourself in a bathtub the next morning...

im all for trying it once and see how it goes... if it bombs, then we go back to being the assholes we are and have our own private event....

Da Chia - Steve Gavic is the main coordinator this year, though i could fill you in on whats going on too... i did part of 99 and 2000 also, so i pretty much know the ins and outs of what the syty'ers require if you wanted to discuss anything.

good feedback so far...thanks everyone.

i think this is a really good idea. if we can keep some separation, having the event with the s-series guys would be a smart business deal. ive been at the nats every year since i bought my truck, and its not drawing a crowd anymore. its also on the other side of the universe, so it makes it REALLY hard to get there with a truck. how is everyone getting their trucks there? i cant seem to rent anything to tow with for a reasonable amount of cash. does everyone own thier own tow vehiccles? it looks like its gonna cost me a fortune to go race. i might just have to fly up there.

Why not put the idea out for a vote. Majority rules. End of story. :-?

While Im not a fan of combining the events as I said it is a good idea in terms of dollars and cents not to mention getting more ppl involved.

Im not above hanging out with the S truck crowd either as a syty is an S truck but Id rather not. Im just not a fan of dragging frame, neon paint/lights, 2.2 giggawatt stereos, and chromed out posermobiles with 18 second times slips.

I can handle a few TPI powered s trucks as that at least takes some common sense and ability to do the swap. Ive had a few V8 s trucks and they are a complete hoot to drive (going WOT at ~55mph and getting sideways can be fun  ) but they arent a syty. As a matter of fact I quit messing with V8 s-10s because around here everyone and their brother had one and you'll NEVER get one to hook worth a damn with an engine making any power unless you tub it. I tried.

Anyway, like I said put the idea out to vote. If the vote says combine events then do it. If the majority says no then dont. I'll show up either way (not this year.. gonna miss the nats. ).

E-RUE,

What are you trying to rent to go to the nats? Trailer? Truck? Truck and trailer?

Its not too bad if you can come up with a tow vehicle and only have to rent a trailer. The U haul I rented last year cost me $250 for Tuesday through Sunday. As long as I had it back by monday before 10AM I didnt hafta pay extra (thats why we drove non stop from chitown to NC).

I think I spent about $450 in gas for the round trip and $250 for the trailer. Thats not too awfully bad IMO but it still put a dent in the ol checking account considering I bought the tow truck just ($800) for the trip and rebuilt an engine for it (~$500) the week before the nats. You'd just have to rent trailer/truck or both for less than a week.

i have access to a trailer, but have no truck. i think a truck is roughly $100 a day with unlimited miles, and then another $500 for gas. i dont think i can swing $1000 dollars just to go to the nats and race my slow syclone. although id love to do it.

Drive it.

Regarding the Nats it wouldn't be bad economically although I enjoy the smaller group.

Just thinking outload but..

i really think we should consider teaming up with the S-Series to do the nationals together for 2004.

now, i know your saying, F that, im not hanging around with pansy S10/Sonoma owners who dont even have fast trucks... BUT.. heres my reasons

1. Theres a shitload of S-Series. Even if we join together, we'd still stand out from the crowd with our trucks.

Agreed but on the other hand I kinda like our small somewhat close knit group. IMO we'd kinda get lost in the shuffle..

I agree with myclone, my biggest concern would be their would be too many people their and I wouldn't be able to distinguish syty owners from s-sereis owners. Their is nothing wrong with s series owners, but if I was to got the nats, I would going to meet the sytyers.

2. Most S-Series owners envy syty owners anyhow, and probably would love to join up on the nats (ive recieved many emails on why we havent already)

Thats nice and all but I dont go to the nats to make an appearance or to get "noticed". I go to race, hang out with fellow syty ppl, act goofy, and have a good time. Nothing personal against the reg S truck crowd as I was into regular S10s for eons it seems. The hopping/frame dragging, bagged, neon lighted, and chrome everything crowd has ZERO appeal to me though. As a matter of fact I really dont even LIKE chrome.

I don't care for the bagged/chrome etc look, but in some ways it wouldn't be that bad to have some people drool over our trucks, it may help the value of our trucks if we can recruit some future owners.

3. S-series get magazine coverage. Face it. there isnt a damn magazine who devotes EVERY issue and has a syty featured...yet theres ALWAYS chevy and fords.... SyTy'ers alone cant get shit for magazine coverage cause our trucks are black and our trucks arent "off da hook".... at least if we team up, we would have a chance of bigger advertisment and MAYBE some magazine coverage. we all know we dont get shit for exposure.

Agreed but.... Unless you have an "off the hook" paint job that isnt black the mags might mention us in passing. Not to sound like an ass but if one of the truck mags approached me and asked to do a write up Id tell em to find someone else. I DO NOT in any way want to be associated with ANY mag that sells and/or promotes wings, chrome/clear tail lights, or any of that other garbage. On top of that their idea of performance is a way over priced ~$300 cold air kit or cat back exhaust. Sorry, dont buy into their world and wont participate. Again, not to sound like an ass but thats the way I feel.

I wouldn't mind having my truck in mag, but if only going to in magazine that is all about appearance then it is sort of a waste. The bigger problem is that we have truck that don't fit mold of the truck. The truck magazine don't cover us (and probably doesn't make that much of a difference anyways) and neither do the high performance mags either. It seems as though, we have been blown off by some of the magazines, that should be covering us. The Lightnings haven't been blown off by the Mustang's Mags.

FAST has had our annual meet for the past 2 years with the local Turbo Buicks Club... great turnout and lot more variety of people.... plus you have a variety of vehicles to look at.

Ive been to the buick nats in Bowling Green, KY myself and they are WAY more into going fast than show n shine type stuff. There were PLENTY of super nice buicks there but those same cars made passes down the track not sit in the grass with the hood up trying to blind everyone with chrome. The actual "show car" area might have had a dozen cars on average (some days less some days more) where as the staging lanes ALWAYS had ppl wanting to race when it wasnt raining.

My point? The buick guys are a diff crowd IMO and maybe thats why I personally enjoy going to their nats as well. Lotsa "hands on/I modded it myself" type ppl that I enjoy being around. I just dont see that happening with the S series nats going by the coverage Ive seen of it.

I am not a big fan of GN & T-types (some of their owner in my area really turned me off) In manys ways, our truck share the same overall concept of the GN's, a turbo charged motor in an existing design with an appearance package. Our truck have more overall unique parts. Though, The GN and SyTy's share almost nothing in common. The both do the same thing as in going quick in a straight line. A combined meet with them would probably be our best bet for the correct coverage we need, but they may balked at us attending and taking part at their meet.

but I like our unknown/flying under the radar reputation just the way it is.

IMO The problem with our trucks getting too far under the radar screen, is that the value of our trucks goes down. I personally don't car that much about resale value (well after I sell my Ty that is), the bigger problem I see is that if they get too cheap, alot of them won't be kept up or fixed because it won't be worth fixing, the limited aftermarket support will dwindle, and no one will bother making repro parts for them.

I think this would be a fun venture and a neat opportunity.

I agree on the numbers part. The draw for S-SeriesNationals is huge. There are many folks who know the history and stats of the Sy/Ty, but just as many who do not - who would see these trucks in their whole new light.

As far as not being just for us (I say that loosely - haven't been to a NATS since 2000) - well if done say in similar setting as this years s-series NATS at the campground - if there is joint organization - maybe there can be accomodation for an area for syty's that wish to park together. :D I find the thought of blending in with the other trucks quite amusing - Sy/Ty's are the foxiest trucks evar made and unique. Those who wish to hang by themselves can easily do so. There are young and old, families and singles, partiers and hanger outers, plain ol gearheads and enthusiasts. Kinda sounds like a sy/ty crowd to me.

The diversity of the modifications of some of the S-Series really is a sight to behold. Yet, if that's not your scene, there's certainly no reason you gotta look - but others will no doubt be admiring a few of our trucks - inside and out. A lot of those folks have placed a lot of blood, sweat and tears into modifying motors, exterior, interior, suspension, building up, dropping down etc..you name it it's been tried and tested. Hmm - sounds like a sy/ty crowd

Magazine coverage...ahh the dreaded magazine coverage :) I believe they got 3 to cover this years events - and you know...with as much efforts that others have made to get the coverage when having all these trucks together before - it sure would be nice to see some acknowledgement that these trucks are what WE know they are. Not pivotal though.

Now big issue - track time. It's been shared - it's been exclusive - but if done far enough in advance with much commitment - it should be able to be arranged, given both the reputations of both NATS. KCIR would be silly not to accomodate - but again - time is of the essence on this one.

As far as us driving...gees I'd love to see that happen one of these days - but that 3800 miles one way, just always comes up as a hinderance - plus time of year and leave time to make it to and from...flying is so much cheaper. :-?

So yea - I would like to see it happen. I think there'd be lots of benefits, including (but not exclusively); monetarily, educationally (yea - you'd have to definately have a FAQ - better yet - laptop with a Jamie search feature  ) and fun factor (though - this is really what each one of us would make of it).

I think it would be fun to combine them both, yet I also see where you guys are coming from when you say there would be a lot of people. Because there were a lot of people at the S-Series and I am sure there is going to be a lot of people at the SyTy Nats. Also someone made a great point about how it may be hard to seperate SyTy owners and S-Series owners.
Another thing (and this may sound kind of dumb so sorry in advance) I think it is good to have the SyTy Nats by themselves, the reason for that is because SyTys aren't made today, which means they are classics, yet you see s10s basically anywhere and everywhere you go, unlike a Syclone or a Typhoon, which that is why so many people turn their heads to look at your Sy or Ty when driving... :D
Sorry if that didn't make any sense, but I tried! :)
