Test drive questions

I test drove a 43Kish miles Typhoon today and had a couple of questions. Since it may be relevant, the weather was about 40 degrees and rainy. After letting it warm up a bit in town, I took it out on the highway where I had planned to gun it for the first time. I had it in D and punched it at about 45 mph. When I did, I heard some noise from the engine. It was louder than a tick, but quieter than a knock from a rod or something major. It made this sound about 5 times in rapid succession before I could let off the gas, as I wasn't expecting to have to let off the gas. There was no noticable power loss. It may have been detonation knock? Obviously, this was a major concern for me so after about a half mile, I dropped the speed down and tried it again. No abnormal sounds at all this time. Or the next 4 times. I wanted to be sure. I think it's been on the lot for a while and they said about all it gets driven is into and out of the garage at night. Would the fact that it is not driven often be a contributing factor at all? It felt very strong and noise free every other time I punched it.

The other thing that seemed odd was that the boost gague pegged itself each time I florred it. Right past the 15psi mark. Now this is the first one I have driven, so I'm not sure how normal this is. No visible mods with the exception of a possible exhaust system as it had an aftermarket exhaust tip. It was raining and I had no desire to crawl under it this time. Is it supposed to get this much boost? The truck felt damn strong.

Re: Test drive questions

I'm willing to bet that the sound was detonation.

The boost gauge is about as useful as an idiot light. I wouldn't assume that it's right, except to see if you're in boost or vacuum.

Re: Test drive questions

I would see if somebody with a Datamaster, etc... can do a ride along with you and see what's the trucks vitals are. What is the VIN?

I do agree with the detonation and the boost gauge

Re: Test drive questions

There is a local guy who has volunteered to help me look it over, but I wanted to make sure a Ty was right for me first so I wouldn't be wasting his time. One test drive is all it took. As soon as I can sell my other car, I will be in the market for this or a similar one if this is gone.

Here's the VIN - 1GDCT18Z3N0811890

I'm sure the truck needs a tune real bad too, so it will only run better when purchased. That is if the person knows what they need for a good tune up on these trucks.

Re: Test drive questions

I just sold my syclone to my friend ted and it was having that problem where it was cuttin out and sputtering. if you watch the boost gauge see if it goes past 15. when it goes past 15 it usually doesnt have enough fuel to keep up with the air so it cuts out. its does it mostly at the top of each gear. what i did to fix it was take the arm off the waste gate and shorten it so it doesnt hold as much boost but it spools faster. it only take 2-3 times of guessing to get it where you want it.

Probably caused by 87 octane. Usually dealers or used lots only run that... :2cents:

That could be your problem right there.

Re: Test drive questions

That may be it. I had the same problem when I bought an 87 Shelby CSX years back. I left it at my parents for a couple of months and when I came to pick it up, it ran like ass. A tank of good gas and everything was great again. Thanks for the ideas guys!
