Maybe it's not as big of a deal down there, but I don't see a sump pump in your pit...
what happens if you get a big downpour of rain and it fills your pit? Think small, enclosed area, filled with water, and a cat. I'd take my chances with the tornado vs. that combo. :0

Our water table is high enough locally to make such a thing a necessity, I'm guessing it's generally drier/sandier there, though.

Hey Dig,
Luckily this is a one-piece galvanized steel unit that is embedded in 6" of concrete on all sides and bottom - till it rusts out there won't be much of a chance of water getting in. I do, however, worry about a fire taking place on top of the shelter and getting baked, or broiled, in this case.... hopefully a tornado would blow things far enough downwind there wouldn't be anything left to burn (I can't imagine my Sy getting blown around like that cow in Wizard of Oz :( )!
