Serious about performance
I haven't wrote any Kills in a while and I see some good ones on here, so hopefully you Kill-lovers will enjoy this one...
I was cruising the local strip hot-rodding one night about a month ago when I came across a black Subaru WRX STi with mods. Ever since they came out, the WRX and the Evos have been suspiciously absent at any stoplight I ever encounter, even though I see them all the time. I have never got the chance to launch against one and compare AWD.
Now keep in mind I try to take it easy on my truck and I don't often launch at stoplights on main roads anymore, and when I do I try to keep it on the easy side because it's tough to get the "sweet spot" where it hooks up to the max without spinning or bogging.
Well I get next to this black STi and I can tell he's trying to run from a roll. There wasn't much road so I waited and we wound up at a 3-wide red light with about 15 cars behind us in a pack. An audience, if you will..
I start creeping forward to egg him on. I stall up and oh no! The dreaded turn arrow or something on the other side! The converter's stalling a little higher than I wanted; so I eased off the gas a little, then reapplied it to try and maintain. Took an extra bit for the light to go green and when it did, SHAZAM!! I took off with what was probably the hardest launch I've ever had on the street, hell it was the hardest launch ever! The converter and boost must have been at precisely the most ideal spot, because when it took off it felt like a big block spraying a 300 shot out of the hole! The kind of launch where you feel nothing but G-Forces and the seat belts locking up against your chest! I must have been across the intersection before his rear tires crossed the white crosswalk lines. I am not even sure if he launched or not, I was so far ahead. (If he did launch he must have let out right away).
I was practically thrilled myself at this point, my conversation with the passenger going something like this:
Me: Holy Shit!
Pass: Oh my god!
Me: Did you feel that??
Pass: Yeah! Oh my god!
Me: I know! It ****ing took off!
Pass: That was insane!
Me: That had to be one of the best launches ever! Holy shit!
Pass: I can't believe that happened!
(laughter)
We were laughing and swearing about it at the next light in the middle of a 3 lane when some car first pulls up next to us in the right lane. I look over and all 3 passengers are looking my way and the driver has his mouth wide open and he says "Holy ****, did that thing take off!!" And I've got a smile on my face about the size of a football field. Two more cars rolled up and said stuff to the same effect "It was just like a missle out of the hole." It was the kind of situation where me and my passenger were laughing and replaying the situation in our mind, for at least a good 10 minutes afterwords.
That one launch would be enough to make owning my truck worth it for this entire year...
Anyways, not long after the "mega launch", I get next to the STi and he asks the usual how fast is it, props etc. and says he can't race from a stop very well due to his clutch, but he'll try from a roll. He has a GT35R turbo and some other toys. Well we hit it, and holy smokes! My truck runs mid-high 11s and this WRX was almost even with me! A lot faster than what I was expecting. When he shifted, he'd drop back a half a length. (I love my automatic for this reason!!) I kept the pedal to the floor into 3rd and when he shifted again, he dropped back again but was regaining some ground. I shut it down and he flew by... We paid respects at the next light and he said he's got some work to do before he's fully set up. Perhaps another time..
Shortly afterwards (I'm still high off the mega-launch from 5 minutes earlier), a plain jane looking gray Audi pulls up next to me. I hear a little turbo and I'm thinking OK joker.. I've already played enough for now.. My passenger figures I should just hit it anyways. "You know you're gonna just beat him anyway". He gets a bit of a jump on me and I hammer it, commanding all 25 PSI Boost and what I figure is 500+HP, plenty to smoke this guy with.... And I can't believe it, but this guy start to pull on me! And I definitely had my foot to the boards. For a moment I can see a loss in my near future, when suddenly he shifts and drops back just like the STi did, but only so we were now dead even. This was my only chance. The 700R4 pounded into 3rd and quickly locked up the torque converter clutch, delivering the small but necessary (at this point) surge in power as the high stall converter gained 100% efficiency. I pulled on him a fender and he got into his high RPM sweet spot and began pulling on me. I reached a high enough speed that I had to just shut it down and he screamed into the distance!! Now I was the one who couldn't believe what I'd just saw!
We toyed around two more times and it was the same thing. He wouldn't race from a stop though. I ended up talking to the guy later and he was cool as hell! Turns out it's an S4 twin turbo 2.7L V6 DOHC 4 valve, with "K04 turbos" he just put on, and he's still tuning it. I'm telling you this thing looked like something one of my aunts would drive. Just an average looking late model sedan (but a real nice one). He said the same thing the STi guy did about his clutch preventing him from racing from a stop, and he mentioned he had seen my "mega launch" from behind when I was next to the STi and couldn't beleive it! He was nearly as excited as I was about it. :rotf: I thought it seemed like he had me beat from a roll, but he actually admitted that he couldn't tell who would win, and that we'd have to try a real drag race at some point in the future.
All in all, some of the most fun I've had on the street in years!
