Re: The Life and Time of Typhoon #2320

i should have asked Sy381 to video me taking my brother for a spin becuase he was there for it. But he was too busy stomping his feet and throwing a temper tantrum since i took my brother out but NOT him.

so i'm diving back into my truck a little when i'm able to sneak out to look at it. My electric fan stopped kicking on so i need to fix that first and foremost if i expect to be able to drive the thing at all. What threw me off was the fuses hadn't popped on the thing. But the other night i realized that the fuse holder itself was singed and the fuse was basically welded to the holder. Odd. So i'm about to solder in a new fuse holder, but figured i'd check the relay just for fun.

the damn relay got burn out too. So i don't know what happened. My odyssey battery died and had a bad cell in it or something so i'd been charging the hell out of it to be able to start/move the truck - dunno if that cuased the frying or what...hopefully once i replace these it won't happen again but i'm typically not that lucky.

One thing i've always disliked about the turbo setup on this truck is the intercooler/piping. It has a smallish core mounted where the cche is, and only a few inches of the core is even exposed to air - the rest is hiding behind the bumper/cover. So the easiest solution to that is redoing the intercooler setup. I wanted to eliminate a lot of piping so i chose an intercooler that fills up the grill completely and is meant for twin turbos.

i removed the old IC and grill to get ready for the new fmic. I'll also need to redo one tranny cooler line so that i can mount it down in the cche area (probably...might change my mind on that so i don't have to worry about it eating any rocks)

Here is the IC and all the piping/silicone/clamps. Pretty absurd in my opinion. 12 joints, 24 clamps!

My new IC just arrived this morning, so hopefully i can test fit it tonight to get a good idea of where i'll need to cut holes for the piping through the radiator support. Although that skeletal aluminum radiator support i have sitting in the corner is begging to be used for this...i'm just not sure i wan't to use it or not. :dunno:

How many fans do you have? That little 30/40a relay will have a hard time driving one fan and lasting any amount time much less two... I tried using relays like that on my old V8 blazer with those flex-a-lite fans and they would only last a month or two. I just ordered and installed two 75a 12v relays on my current truck. One for each fan. Also I used all 10ga wire fed directly from my main battery distribution box. I don't think I will have any issues with this setup but only time will tell..

I just have a single, but large, fan. On your suggestion i just ordered a 75a relay, so hopefully i can just install it and forget about it.

If you don't have the ground wire on your fan(s) going directly to the battery, do so. I had a similar problem with my setup and called Flex-a-lite about it. I had my ground wire going directly back to the battery but it still did it. May have gotten a bad fuse in my case. Either way, I am going to a Cooper Bussmann circuit breaker on mine.

Manual brakes??

yup. i had hydraboost and power steering...but the ls1 power steering pump didn't seem to enjoy it and was a little leaky. So rather than fight the pump i figured might as well just go to manual steering and manual brakes, and remove the power steering pump all together.

i contemplated getting a breaker - i always thought they were cool back in my car stereo days...And i found a self resetting breaker that would suit my needs, but figure i'll just stick to a fused relay for now and see if it works. If it burns out again, i'd rather only have to replace a few dollar fuse holder than a high dollar breaker.

Trans brake, or are you going to be happy with 2 psi launches?

i don't live my life 1/4 mi at a time...so i don't really care that much about the launch. Plus the less i can launch the less i jolt the driveline the less i break shit.

If i get into drag racing, which i highly doubt i'll make time to get to the strip (closest to me is 60mi) then i'd consider the 80e trans brake.

Also I rarely street race even when i have someone begging me to, but even a 0psi launch would eat up most stuff out there.

seems like it'll fit just fine...a bit snug, but will fit. might get one of those cheap grills for test clearancing.

But Vin, the launch is the best part of owning a SyTy ;)

WHAT!!!???

In addition to Matt and Mike's comments about your fan, on Abe's Ty with the Volvo fan, we ended up having to run a Maxi fuse. Not sure if you already have one but the smaller fuses sometimes just can't hang. We used the 75a relay as suggested and a 60a maxi fuse.
