Make sure its running 100% should your first upgrade. Do the reliability mods and look and learn how to read a scan tool. Most likely if it needed a new motor, its because it wasn't running 100% in the first place.

I'm beginning to think if the noobies knew what to seach for, they would.

Most probably don't know what terms to put in the box.

If he doesnt know what to type in a search about what mods he can do to it, then I think his best bet would be to make his #2 post being the Ty listed forsale.

It doesnt take to much brains to go.. "hm, what basic first mods should I do." He'll, I'll bet we have at least one or two threads on this first page in this forum already that could answer some of his questions.

Like others said, use a search to find more detailed info, but here's what I would do first:

1) Buy a DataMaster cable and software. Before you jack with ANYTHING, do this. This will prevent many headaches in the future and will still be usefull when you start modding your Ty (big or small). Make sure your knock sensor and 02 readings look normal (0 to very small knock count and O2 readings of 800-900 for WOT). If the O2 readings are low, check you fuel filter and fuel pump. My pump was shot at 47,000 miles.

2) Check you IC pump for flow. The upper IC core should be only slightly warm at best (mine is usually cool) after some hard driving. Mine was shot on a low mile truck. If it doesn?t work, check the fuses and replace with the Johnson pump if necessary.

3) Hardwire your IC pump on with the ignition switch turned to ?On?. Run a jumper wire from the yellow wire on the IC pump relay to a ground will do it.

4) Install an aftermarket boost gauge. The stocker is a sick joke. I like Stewart Warner.

5) Check you rear brakes. They should hold the truck without creep to at least 5-7psi boost. If they don?t, do the basic SyTy rear brake upgrade (larger 7/8? rear wheel cylinders and larger rear shoes). It worked wonders on my truck without messing up brake balance or ABS functionality.

6) Manual boost controller (set to 14psi). My stock boost controller was a little flaky. Some guys may cringe at this but I really like the old ball and spring boost controller for a single stage of boost. Even with a stock turbo and without a cat I have no problems with boost spikes or creep now. If you go with an ?Ultimate? or equivalent ?chip? later, you may want to reuse your stock controller.

7) Install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. It will help you tune WOT to a certain degree and will help down the road with more major mods.

8) Install a Racetronix fuel pump kit. They are easy to install and move quite a bit more fuel than the stocker. My stock pump was shot when I bought my truck. The DataMaster had O2 readings of 100 at WOT under boost (VERY lean). The Racetronix kit fixed this completely.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: the oldest questoin

1st mod everyone should do is to do what I did. Read this forum and keep reading it. I have spent hours and hours on this forum. I have only had a sy for 9 months but I feel like I had it for years. I did all the mods myself and feel good about working on this truck with your guys help. Like it has been stated before a good running truck is first mod. Get a datamaster and learn what your truck is doing. have fun with it before it ends up in the garage for 3 months like mine did.

the problem with boost control on stock trucks is the pathetically undersized WG, coupled with 15 years of age that makes 75% of them sticky and inefficient = shitty boost control. you can throw on a 500 boost controller and have minimal luck fixing the problem...

there is a reason why lots of people weld or wire that POS shut, buy something like a minigate, put it on the crossover pipe and then use an aftermarket boost controller.

I just don't think that gutting cats and messing with the exhaust will work on most trucks knowing how many suffer from shitty boost control. I would way, you got lucky, but maybe I'm wrong.

my #1 piece of advice is find out what the hell motor is in it and tranny as well...who built them, and what specifc parts were used. I'd rather have a 200K syty with the right parts than a 100miler with who knows what.

Re: the oldest questoin

don't overlook #1....buy or build an ALDL cable....use Datamaster or Tunerpro to find out where your truck stands. log your truck..post the file...and let everyone "pick it apart" ! that is when the learning and work begins :)

You're probably right. I think I'm just lucky that mine appears to work properly, though it is rusty as hell.

When I ditch the stock turbo, I'll be ditching integral wastegates as well.

I think your advice was great...i just dont' like the boost controller thing ;)

.....also, i don' think the integral WG is bad if sized properly....my PTE one works great and I have solid boost control, but then again, its properly sized for the setup.

Good info!
