Re: The Purple wire

if you have to jiggle the wheel something in the column is fubar most likely the ign switch is worn out or out of adjustment

Re: The Purple wire

First mod I'm gonna do.Dont want any starting probs. Move battery to trunk. Replace purple wire and heat wrap it, maybe a double wrap by the dp.
Then all the other ignition parts.

Re: The Purple wire

So, i just went to radio shack and purchased a 30amp 12volt DPDT relay for 8 bucks.will this work? I have been checking all the threads about this but am I just supposed to splice this somewhere between the brake booster and starter? I dont know enough to mess with the steering column but I know there is a problem there and will fix it later on but I just want to get this car so it will start regardless if its hot or not.

Re: The Purple wire

Yes. There are little numbers by the terminals. I install the relay adjacent to the battery B+ terminal on the firewall, next to the A/C suitcase. Connect as follows:

  • #85. Remove the purple wire from the starter. From above, open the engine loom behind the distributor, and pull out the purple wire. Trim any burnt section, but you should have enough remaining 'good' wire. Connect to #85.
  • #87. Run a new piece of #10 AWG wire to the 'S' terminal on the starter. Where the purple wire was originally. Connect this to terminal #87
  • #30. Connect to the B+ stud on the firewall. Use #10 wire.
  • #86. Connect to ground. I use one of the mounting screws for the B+ stud. Can use #14 or 16 wire for this one.

That's it.

One more question, I get everything but what is the B+ stud on the firewall?
Thanks

Re: The Purple wire

i have never had this issue yet,i think its more of the starter solenoid failing from heat more than anything

Stab it and steer it

:2cents:Well yes and no. I've seen pics here of that wire just cooked. The starter solenoid needs full bat voltage to function properly so this mod will help. But if the starter is toast already then the mod won't help. I've been part of some interesting discussions on exactly how to wire this mod. Using the relay described, I think, is a good alternative.:2cents:

Re: The Purple wire

i know there are a lot of variables and my starter could very well be toast but it is 6 months old and I would rather spend $20 dollars on a relay and some wire and insulation and try this before i spend money on a starter that could be perfectly fine. And, if I am wrong I did an upgrade to the car that should be done anyway.

PS. what the hell is the B+ stud on the firewall???

Re: The Purple wire

The B+ studs on the firewall are connection points "distribution points" if you will, for the positive side of the battery.

You are not going to ground to that stud, you are going to run the ground to one of the bolts that hold the mount to the fire wall, the stud is a POS BATTERY. if you don't get this call me.

Re: The Purple wire

So I had some time this weekend to do this mod. I couldnt get to the purple wire that attaches to the starter because it was too hard to reach so I just spliced in my Radio Shack relay near the brake booster and used Davep's instructions and it worked great so far. I have been driving it for 2 days and always starts right up. Took me less than an hour and less than 20 bucks for everything. its nice to have more confidence that your car will start after you turn it off. Thanks Davep for the instructions, they were perfect!!!

Re: The Purple wire

I don't have the click-click problem, but I went ahead and replaced the fried section of my purple wire. When I lightly tugged on it, the little ring terminal at the starter snapped:

Spliced in a new section of 10-gauge wire:

Attached a new ring terminal:

Added thermo-sleeve to reflect away the heat:

Connected the wire back to the starter:

By the way, I didn't remove either the starter or the downpipe.

Does anyone have pictures of where you are splicing into the wire by the brake booster. Sorry I am not near my truck and can go out to look at it. Also would 3 ft of the silicone 10awg wire be enough?

Re: The Purple wire

Ok, here's my recent issue. The truck has done this 2 or 3 times in the past 3 months. About 2 days ago, it's been getting REALLLY bad.

Doesn't matter if it's cold or hot. I'll turn the ign and just get a light "clunk" sound everytime I turn it. If I do it enough, it will turn over sometimes. I'm thinking the starter or maybe even my ign in the steering column. Any other ideas? Does this sound like purple wire to any of you? Remember, it does it from the very first start of the day, and throughout.....Thanks

Re: The Purple wire

sounds like it to me... like a click noise.. right.. i replaced the wire and that didn't do it for me, so i took apart the starter and cleaned off the contacts put some electric grease on the inside of the solenoid.. Now it works good ever since..

Re: The Purple wire

The contacts on the wire coming from the battery and the purple wire need to be clean!

ive been having lots of starter issues lately, i almost replaced it again last week but i noticed the contacts were corroded. i cleaned them up real good with some sand paper and a wire brush. put the old starter back on and now it starts great.

might be something to check out

Not really a click noise as much as it is a light clunk.
I'll give it a whirl when I get it back. Having the whole frontend rebuilt right now. All new everything. After the last fiasco with the rearend, I figure it will be cheaper, and faster than doing it myself.
