Thanks for everyone's help and especially whoever diagnosed the problem and came up with a simple solution. I fixed mine tonight. I did not remove the starter and could not remove the purple wire from the starter with it in place. So I cut the purple wire about 8" from the front of the starter and spliced in a good 10 ga wire with soilder, heat shrink and wire loom. Before splicing the other end, I tested it by contacting the 10 ga wire to the + battery terminal and crank but no click, click. Then I spliced into the other end of the purple wire just above the brake boost as recommended. Then hit the ingition switch and crank/start with no more click click. Nice fix for under $10.00.

Cool, glad you got it fixed. All the relay does (when done my way ) is take out the resistance - voltage drop of the ign sw. If it works the way you have it, leave it alone. If it ain't broke don't fix it I guess. Been done that way on big trucks for years but their solenoids are half the size of our starters and draw a tad more juice.

I'm bringing mine in tomorrow to get the wire replaced from above the brake booster to the solenoid. Normally I would do it myself, but at college I don't have the room, tools, or jack/stands to do it. :rant:

well we had same clik, clik, clik, nothing issue on ty.... tried purple wire trick 3 diff ways really hoping it would work!...to no avail tho... ended up removing starter, testing and finding weak solenoid.... under warranty and fixed now.... heat wrapped the purple wire anyway just incase it shorted the previous solenoid... no clik now...all start...

i'm going to try and do this tomorow.. did you have to remove the dp?.. i can't seem to get near my starter without removing that.

unless i'm just that new to starters and not looking at the right part ha.. but i'm pretty sure i am

Trust me, you don't any part of removing a downpipe unless you *have* to. It can be an endeavor that can be measured in hours or days... You can get limited access by removing the passenger side wheel and going through the wheel well too.

Heh, this is an old post. FWIW my truck and my bud's are still performing flawlessly to this day.

I relay-isolated my purple wire up by the brake booster... has worked like a champ, and very easy to do.

well i did like what 0-60N4 did, and that didn't help out my problem.. still clicks like theres no energy going to it.. so i think i will just have to somehow get at the spot where the purple wire connects.. To replace the connector to a 10awg wire..

everyone one thinks its always the purple wire,its NOT some of them will burn and not work but most of the time it is usually the solenoid.

scratch that...bad alternator now...back to clik clik clik start

starts w/ no clik now only if battery is fully charged up....underdrives arent helping weak alternator either

I don't have the click-click problem, but I went ahead and replaced the fried section of my purple wire. When I lightly tugged on it, the little ring terminal at the starter snapped:

Spliced in a new section of 10-gauge wire:

Attached a new ring terminal:

Added thermo-sleeve to reflect away the heat:

Connected the wire back to the starter:

By the way, I didn't remove either the starter or the downpipe.

The trick is the heat sleeve. Hopefully the splice is soldered. But anyway check that yellow connector in a few days of driving and see how bad it's already gotten. After running sleeve like you did and seeing the term toasted I ran sleeve to the end as far as I could go on both the "purple" wire and the bat cable.

Where did you get that nice thermal wrap? Just doing head gaskets on my truck and fixed my purple wire would like to add that on there for added safety.

Figured that I would put this here. So in the mornings when i first start my car it starts right up with a little jiggling of the steering wheel but after it gets hot or even warm it wont start and i open the hood and let it cool off and sometimes its 10 to 40 minutes before it starts.This has all the elements of the purple wire syndrome. I took it to my mechanic because I am so busy lately,and printed out all the info from this site and explained to him that it is this wire and the heat kills it.He calls me a day later and says that the oil pan is leaking some oil on the starter and that is what is wrong. I understand that he does 20 cars a day so this SEEMS like what is wrong to him because he doesnt know Typhoons.Do you think he could be right or should I just get the hot shot relay and replace that length of purple wire and see if that fixes it? He also said that my starter is done but i have been driving it for a week now and as long as its cool it will start. also, when i start the car i have to jiggle the steering wheel even if its cold to get it to start, is there a problem in the steering column????
