They make adjustable ones that can be quit or very loud by turning the top of one... can't remember the brand.. sorry.

What's the sound difference with a BOV? Is it a noticeable sound?

I've got the HKS on my Syclone...sounds like an eagle wiht a low pshhhht sound ( I don't like it too much, but it does add more life to the turbo) :2cents:

um...you here a "pssshhhht" sound when you let off the throttle...or during shifts on a manual tranny. Just a quick release of compressed air. Its very noticeable. The motor will not sound any different.

Are you sure you're not confusing your sounds? I think it's more of a "CHHOOoooo" sound.

Back on topic though...

In order to make that high pitched whistle noise, the "other brands" use smaller outlets. It's forcing a lot of air through small holes to achieve the loud noise. IMO, I'd want something that vents that excess pressure as quickly as possible. Say for instance, a certain aftermarket turbo company *cough, cough* makes a 50mm BOV. It does exactly what it's supposed to do: vent excess pressure. It does it as quickly as air starts to flow around a lifting 50mm valve. http://www.tialsport.com/prod_bv.htm

I received my stainless IC pipe last week with the HKS flange already welded on....(won on ebay) I ordered my HKS SSQV BOV like 2 days ago, so I should be receiving it like tomorrow or friday. Hopefully have it installed by this weekend. I just disconnected the vacuum ball and plugged it (near distributor) Would it be fine to pull the vacuum line needed for the BOV from there? I would think so....

I always like to leave factory equipment hooked up properly. You can T for vaccuum at the line on the front of the intake manifold. That is the closest vac line to your BOV as well.

Other say that you don't need a BOV and other say you do need.

In car with automatic transmission it's not as necassary as with a manual transmission, since you are not pumping gas during shifting.

Another thing to think about is when running high boost and not BOV is your throttle body. I have a picture of broken throttle body shaft (from Ford Mondeo) after closing throttle suddenly from 2 bar (29 psi) boost.

I can email this picture to someone who can put it in here.

I personally like to have my Sy quiet and I am annoyed with the typical ricer BOV who seems to add them to show off. How hard is it to reroute the BOV back to the IC (assuming air to air)? Who makes the quietest BOV?

then it becomes a diverter valve instead of a blow off valve. Diverter valves have flanges/hookups to make it easier to recycle the air into the system. 1st gen eclipses, all turbo subarus and audis....come with them.

Who makes the quietest BOV?

HKS Super Sequential if you have the *right* insert.

The silver one is the one that came with my BOV and it sounds like a whistling bottle rocket. The purple one is the quiet one that I bought from Ian. On a whim, I bought the gold insert from an import performance shop that is on my way to work. From HKS's website:

"The HKS SSQV silver triple-fin discharge design produces a powerful and unique aggressive blow-off sound along with added visual distinction. Additional triple-fin inserts are available in gold (standard high frequency sound) for visual appeal and in purple metallic (emits a lower frequency sound than both the standard and gold SSBV inserts) for an alternate sound and appearance. SSQV inserts are easily interchangeable within minutes."

I figured that the silver one that came with my BOV was the "standard" one and I couldn't tell from the pic it was 100% the same or not. I ordered it and to my disappointment, it was the EXACT same insert just a different color... That was a waste of $30.

I'm adding a BOV because I don't like the idea of that air going back through the turbo. I'd rather release some before it reaches it. Also, I don't mind the sound. I like loud exhausts and BOV'S. By the way, is there anywhere I can get one of those purple inserts for a cheaper price then what HKS is asking? $30 on ebay also.

i will be honest i had one on my first build then when phil and i tried to dyno tune it we had boost problems etc we took out the valve and other things it was leaking boost past.so he told me i didnt need anything extra really but i liked the sound ,but i finally realized u dont need one and there is no real benefit i dont think on our trucks,but if u like the sound go for it .

what your hearing is called compressor surge its forceing air back threw the compressor slowing the turbo down. adding a BOV releses the pressure keeping the turbo spinning so when you get back on it, it dosent take so long to spool. so I would say yes this is a good idea. I think its stupid they didnt come with one from the factory

I think its stupid they didnt come with one from the factory

you seem to be overlooking the fact that we stay WOT through shifts. The turbo doesn't slow down in our application

I have no actual data, but it does make a difference in turbo flutter. It's much more noticeable when you're in the same room as the engine on the dyno, it probably reduces turbo flutter by 30% ... so, if you like putting extra stresses on the turbo, they're no good :lol:

I have a manual and I'm going to plumb one in.....the HKS SSQV I bought from Xcalibur to be exact....BUT you can't reroute it into the piping easily...it just isn't setup for that. When I had a TALON I used a 1st gen DSM valve that had the top crushed to run more boost and not leak and hard pipes but ran that back into the plumbing cause of the way it was setup....on an automatic car its not as bad, I'd have one because if you go 1/4 mile racing or anything, let off that throttle and all that pressurized air just gets backed up in your system and either hits the turbo or tries to open the throttle blade and neither is a good thing....in a manual car when you hit the clutch under boost a lot of drivers (myself included) lift off the gas for a second so its better to vent that out then trying to force it into the throttle body....just my opinion but if I had a force induced car it would have a BOV
