Re: thinking of stick-shifted ty ...

Yes someone has done it. I don't remember who it was. It Was in a TY and he likes it, I think Waller was or is working on it.

Cons Its an expensive mod, you will lose the boosted launch, it hard on the drivetrain and your 1/4 times will be slower.

Re: thinking of stick-shifted ty ...

There are two 5 speed Tys that I know of. Both were mentioned in this thread - one in Japan, and one in the US. There's also a 6-speed Syclone here in the states. The owner goes by T-56. From what I understand, the 6-speed required a lot of fabrication to get it to mate up with a transfer case, and the 5-speed was a pretty simple swap.

the 5 spd is good, the auto always shifted hard, even when crusing. now i can shit [shift] hard or soft, depending on racing or crusing. but if i had the chance to do it again i wouldnt becasue i miss the boost launch too much and will probably go back to the auto next year. my :2cents:

i dont see the total lost from putting in a stick. EVO's WRX's TSi's GSX's Skylines are all stick shift and have 60ft times just as good some better then ours... if you put a stick in learn how to use it. i have a good friend with a new STI and he had 1.7 60's all day when we took it to the track. i drove it personaly to a 1.7 so i can vouch for it. i think its a great idea somehting different.

i know how to use it im just saying that nothing beats a launch. there is no way i can build boost like the auto. i also drive it in 2wd most of the time so theres a disadvantage also. i like the 5 speed, but also miss the auto awd, u have to understand that one.

Re: thinking of stick-shifted ty ...

yeah i do i had a 2wd trusck with the ty motor is sucked..... tires spinning for days. try driving around in awd with the stick and get down on the launches i think you'll get it and be happy.... you'll be happy mostly with not changing trannies once a week lol

Who thinks the 5spd that gm has made is stronger than a 700?

But we can move to a 6 speed with more fab work, yea they CAN be built up to live but from what I have gathered in stock form they are weak also. Add AWD (read no tire spin) i suspect you will be breaking them also.

Granted I have almost done a 6sp conversion for someone (durability lost out). But we knew off the bat it would no longer be the 0-60 king of a truck, and more of a driver fun factor.

It also seems to me, the driver seat vs the shifter location may not be ideal for rowing the gears. I would think it would need to have a long shifter and throw.

I got to go for a ride in 5spdty's truck.. while its neat, I don't think the trucks were setup for a stick.. as soon as the truck started to build boost greg had to shift..

Re: thinking of stick-shifted ty ...

see now thats what im talking bout, its hella fun, tires spin when ever i want, all the way through third if i want to, but def not as fast. and i dont like drivin in 4x4 with the 5 speed casue there is a vibration. i think i would like it more if i have the awd tc back in. u can also fell the truck is allllooooottt slower when i put it in 4x4. noticebly slower, so i stick to 2wd. and i know if its in 4x4 i will def break something, and i dont have the funds right now to deal with that $hit.

actually i just remembered that i had it in 4x4 the other day in the rain and i droped the clutch at like 4000 rpm and it took off pretty nice. the back end got a little sideways but straightned out when i ran through the gears. but im scared to do that on dry pavement, too much friction for my wallet.

Re: thinking of stick-shifted ty ...

I remember an article that was in Car and Driver back in 1990 or 1989, they took a TTA and swapped in a 6spd. It was for a top end test against cars of the day. It was a little faster on the top end but was much slower in the 0-60 and 1/4mile. by about a .5 to .75 difference.

I know it's not a Ty but that shows they knew what they were doing when it came to equiping these cars with auto's. They could have used a heavier duty trans on the SYTY but auto was the way to go. I don't see many GN guys complaining about thier trans. or TTA guys.

We are the only cursed ones.
