This is getting ridiculous!!

So last weekend I got my trans back together. Turned out I broke my input shaft which in turn trashed the stator shaft of the pump. Got a new pump and input shaft and drum. With the help of a friend put it back in the truck and fired it up and took it for a spin. Well, it shifted great out of first and into second but no 3rd. So I pull the trans back out. I had forgotten to tighten the bolts to the TCC Solenoid  So, I decided to go over everything one more time and make sure it was all ok. Checked the clutches to make sure they didnt get damaged from revving trying to get 2nd to come on. Everything looked great so I put it all back together. I get it back in today and take it for a drive, no 3rd!!! So I pull the pan to double check the check balls. I pull the VB and I find a check ball that I have no clue why was in there because I usually only put in 4 (in the case) and there were 5? So I put it all back together and again, go for a ride, NO 3RD!!! I even air checked what I could while the VB was off and I heard everything engage. What the hell is the deal here? Anyone have any ideas?

well looks like your going to have to pull it out and take a shot gun to it and buy a new one. LOL sorry

Just take to a trans shop local and have them go through it, Just tell them what you have done so far.

Re: This is getting ridiculous!!

Gotta air check the input drum before dropping it in the case and always block the 3rd accumulator bleed (bullet) up in the case. If the input drum leaks between the shaft and drum excessively, you won't be able to apply the 3rd/4th clutch pack. If that bullet leaks off, you'll have no 3rd. Easiest thing to check is the servo lineup. The spring loaded part of the 2nd servo is the 3rd gear accumulator(cushion). If a seal is off or something is in backward, you can lose 3rd.

Right, I checked it when I had it apart but guess Ill be pulling this damn thing again. I'm wondering if it could be the NOS VB I put in? Ill check the 3rd accumulator, as far as air checks go, I must be wrong that when you take the VB off, there are a few ports that lead right into the the case then go to the pump and into the input drum and I thought that one of those ports was for 3rd? I have an adapter for my air chuck that is made for those kinds of spaces so I got it in there real good to where it wasn't spraying back at me much and could hear the pistons applying really good. I can post pics of these ports if you want. So lets just say the drum is fine, the circut would go: governor-->2-3 valve in VB-->accumulator-->3rd clutches?

Well, I got the trans back out AGAIN. I air checked the input drum and it comes on perfect. Checked the Servo line up and all the seals look brand new and aren't even flush with the groove ridges yet. So I started to inspect closely the VB. One thing I noticed was that there is no spring in the bottom of the TV line up. I cant remember correctly but I could have sworn someone telling me that you dont need the spring. I looked at it compared with mine and the TV on the NOS VB I bought feels "limp" compared to mine. Everything in it does move freely though. Im not sure what else to do.

Their is tapered spring in the TV line up, if its put in backwards it will work its way into the bore and get jammed.

I just got back form the trans shop a little bit ago. We went through everything and he was baffled. Everything checks out and looks great. I did notice that the 2-3 valve is much smaller than mine. I am just going to put my old VB back in and see if it works.
