Tire shops and SyTys

Vent. I went through so my BS that its not even funny. Long story short the dumb tire shop is going to pay to have my wheels refinished. They want to leave my truck on blocks in their parking lot while its happening. Are you kidding me? What a freaking pain in the ass this is. They even mounted my front wheels on the rear and the rear wheels on the front and said that I should of told them that they have different offsets. Their impact driver dented and nicked up all around the center lip on EVERY wheel, and it looks like they kicked my center caps around on the floor with the clear coat facing down. These were mint refinished wheels up until I made the wrong decision of putting it in their hands. What a joke. Never again will I take my Typhoon to a tire shop. How sad is that.

Well you live in Sask, so what do you expect. Guess you shouldn't take it to the same place that fixes your John Deere.

What are you going to do when you need tires again?

This is the very reason I take my wheels off and transport them to the tire shop myself. Thankfully, they use a "no face" contact machine but I stand right there and watch their every move anyway.

Reason why I go to a friend of the family. May not be the cheapest, but they respect my stuff.

It's just an example of how useless the people who work their are. I had a bad feeling about it as soon as the guy I talked to was a prick about being at work.. Shoulda said FVCK YOU and walked out. What a way to run a shop. Thanks for the free refinish I geuss? It was Kal Tire.

Kal Tire? Not a surprize. SO they suck there as bad as here. Good friend of mine dumped some good cash on new tires for his Camaro. They nicked all 4 rims changng them over. SO they are paying for getting his rims redone also. Just told him to bring them to me and I would do them at work. The machine there doesn't touch the rims at all. Would have cost him a box of beer or a 40 of rum.

Do the same thing myself.

I will say I was nervous as S&%T when I had to take a forgeline rim to get a tire mounted. I was very insistent the best guy did the work and informed them ahead of time the value.

in my shop I charged 25$ a tire for mount and balance- that includes everything- no disposal fee/weights/stems/or any other add on that most places charge after the fact. since we powder coat we use a machine that has a plastic head and wont hurt the surface of the rim.

ive done problably 10 sets of syty wheels and I find them an easy wheel to do. since they are a 16" wheel the tire pops on and off without a fight usualy and the machine doesn't even touch the wheel. sounds like the tech who did it was just careless.

now on a corvette with runflats- the plastic head bends and rubs against the wheel a bit because of the pressure the tire puts on the machine- but ive never messed a rim up

The more I read about other people's crappy experiences, the less inclined I am to have anyone do anything for me. Sure, I have messed up a couple of things but the education stays and next time, it's cheap. I have also been disappointed with poor service and purchases over the years. Sorry dude. At least it sounds like they will make it right. Hope they stick to that.

How much is a tyre machine?

a tire machine from a reputable company is around 10K, then the balancer is another 10K. you can get Chinese import machines for around 3000 for the mounter and 3000 for the balancer

some of the really nice touchless machines from coats and hunter are close to 18K, and road force balencers are close to 20,000 last time I priced them

roadforce balencing sucks to do- and its expensive most shops charge like 300$ because you label each rim and tire- balance them- and it will tell you which tire to put on which rim then you can go further where it will have you spin the tire while keeping the rim stationary- a lot of times the require little or no weight at all and you will have a perfectly balanced set of rims and tires

Funniest moment in my career in the USSA was when my then boss queries my spelling and looked me straight in the eye and said "around here we write in English".

If only GM had gotten stamps on the wheels to tell folks which ones were fronts and which ones were rears...

SyTyless......for now!
Re: Tire shops and SyTys

Match mounting is where the balancer tells you which tires should go on which rims. Road force balancing is where the tire and wheel have a large drum pressed against them to simulate having a load on them. More accurate way to balance.

Where I work we use a plastic head as well, since we deal with BMWs, Porsches, Mercedes, and other expensive stuff. Sticky weights are also a must on those rims, and SyTy rims as well if you don't want scratches and corrosion from hammer on weights.

It's always a fun experience buying directional tires for SyTys as well.
