Torque Converter with a AWD V8

I dont have a SYTY but I am putting together an AWD Blazer. It will have a 400 small block with tons of low end torque. I have a 700-r4 that is rebuilt, I am trying to decide on a converter (stall speed). I want to keep the lock up feature. I have 3.42 axle gears and I am not sure on tire size yet. Any help or if you can point me in the direction of an expert would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

S-blazer 2 door, Carbed N/A no nitrous, compression is about 9.75:1 with flat top pistons. The cam is a Comp cams XE 262.
This should be the info needed.

Are you gonna drive it regularly or just on occasion? For a driver I'd put about a 2500 in it. For a weekend warrior I'd go around 3500. I drove a 3500 as a daily in an 86 SS Monte for 2 years w/ a HUGE trans cooler on it with no probs.

This is based on my personal experience.

Good to hear that you plan on getting a lock-up control, we still have to get one for our truck. Its a wierd feeling driving on the freeway without feeling the TC lock and unlock. We have a stock SyTy converter and it takes off pretty well.

Its going to be a driver, not daily but quite a bit.I want to be able to drive it on some long trips so I'll probably go with a 2500 not really sure yet. I would like to see some more opinions.

The beauty of a lockup converter is that high stall speed and long trips aren't mutually exclusive.

I'd also keep in mind that you have plenty of choices between 2500 and 3500. 2800, 3000 would also be potential choices.

Since this is a NA truck, it should be easier to pick a converter......Don't have to worry about off-boost power vs on-boost power......

Re: Torque Converter with a AWD V8

Yeah, the fact that its NA helps but its a low RPM engine. So I'm thinking like a 2500 is what I want. but will AWD be a factor? How will it effect (be effected by) the VC in the transfer case?

I have a nice 2500-stall lockup style converter that I am no longer using...had it in a FS thread ..... $75 plus shipping takes it. Sorry to hijack the thread this way!

Re: Torque Converter with a AWD V8

a torque converter rated for a v6 would have a different stall behind a v8. I'd recommend calling the cam manufacturer, they can set you in the right direction. Good to hear there is someone else out there w/ a V8 project. :D
