I am towing my TY on June 5th from FL to PA. I am picking it up, can't wait!
I am renting a uhaul car trailer (not car-doly), and will be towing with by AV. I always have towed before (boat and camper), but never a car. Any hints for me would be great...

Its no different then the boats or campers you have towed. Just remember the weight you have on that trailer, around 4,000 lbs give or take a few lbs. Also check to make sure the UHaul trailer isn't too tongue heavy.... they have a tendency of being that way. You know the drill....good luck!! ;)

Did you by chance look in taking it on the auto train from Flordia to VA and only towing it the rest off the way

Check your tiedowns periodically. I used a U-Haul tandem to move my SHO, had it behind a '96 K2500. Towed well, and didn't have any problems. Not having trailer brakes made things hairy at times ( people cutting in front of me), but it never got out of control.

the u-hauls are VERY tongue heavy. here what they look like loaded with a complete ty. i assume you have the 3/4 ton , mine was only a 1/2 ton. i hated towing with my avalanche , it was a gutless , balless turd. i fixed that though. i traded it in on a 2009 ram crew cab. the more i drive my ram the more i realize what a turd my avalanche was.

Why not back the ty up a bit or load it backwards to get more of the weight over the trailer wheels? Just curious. I would think it would tow much better that way.

thats where they have to be on a u-haul trailer , they give you zero options as to where you can put it on the trailer. its either there or you have no way to use the tie downs.

edit: i thought you meant move it back on the trailer. thought of it but then there would be zero tongue weight.

loading it backwards is a bad idea, the rear windows on these trucks are not tempered or whatever is done to the windshields. 1 stone jumps up and kiss that rear window goodbye, ask me how I know.

although covering the whole thing with painters tape may stop that from happening, I wouldn't want to risk it.

Really only one place to put the towed vehicle? Whats the deal with a uhaul trailer? That shit sucks then. Remind me never to use one unless there are absolutely no other options.

I hate towing something that is gonna make the tow vehicle wander all over the place...drives me crazy. By the looks of it I would have tried it backwards on the trailer....looks like it would be balanced fairly decently with the ty backed all the way but again I never used a uhaul trailer just going on how it looks in the pic.

Also never thought about shit hitting the rear window but screw it just replace it with a no wiper rear window when you get home. Kidding ...kinda.

If the uhaul trailers suck that bad use a dolly and unbolt the rear driveshaft off the rear and strap it up. Hell used one to tow Don(raist103) ty from nj to Waller in southern sc with no problems. Just a thought.

U haul trailers are VERY tongue heavy as shown above. Used my tahoe one year to tow a ty to homecoming. It worked, just not ideal. Ended up buying a trailer after.

You don't ever want to get into a no tonque weight situation though, your asking to let the trailer decide where you will be going. Been there done that once, that was enough for me, learned my lesson doing 65 on the freeway sideways, never again.

Re: towing my new ty home from FL to PA

you would still have some tongue weight if u backed it on just back it up as far as u can i just hauled a big k5 blazer on my car trailer like a week ago backwards i still had tongue weight cause the backed it up the way and the front was right over the axels on the trailer so there was n much on the back of the trailer to pull the front weight off it if u understand what i mean there

This has been very helpful! Keep the ideas coming! With towing with the ty backwards, that can work, but losing tongue weight worries me...

I would bring some straps with you and configure a way to strap it with regular tie-downs instead of the tire wraps they supply you to hold the car in place.

Should be some spots on the trailer to hook some straps if not then get some axle straps and loop around the tralier and then hook the strpas to it.

My 2 cents.

Ralph

P.S. I used one to tow my SS454 Pickup From NJ to Florida. No issues---Eveytime i stopped outside of NJ people were all over my truck looking at it. VA, MD, NC, SC, GA All Love trucks and i surely could tell that.

Re: towing my new ty home from FL to PA

I was thinking about the comment about losing the back window due to rock chips and what could be done to prevent it.

Cardboard. A layer of cardboard taped to the window should give it enough protection to keep the glass from breaking (unless somebody's throwing bricks at you!). Might not be a bad idea for the tailgate too. I would suggest a layer of good masking tape over any painted surface.

I too would suggest a good set of axle straps. The ratchet straps that Home Depot and Lowes sell are fine for alot of things, but they lack in a good way to attach to the car safely. Something like this would be good: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM-G7965&N=700+115&autoview=sku

I think Ralph hit it dead on, bring your own straps. The strap that are on the Uhaul trailer might limit your locations for strapping it down, but if you bring your own, you should be fine. You can just put the Ty a little more towards the back of the trailer, so you have less tounge weight, and you're good! You'll have to give me a call when you get it back up here....

Congrats on the purchase! Look forward to seeing it at NASTE (and Nats?) events. We need more reds around here.
