trans-plant (get it :D)

I have a donor 700R4 from a Blazer and a stock broken Ty 700R4.

What do I need to do to the donor to make it work? I'm thinking valve body from the Ty and newgaskets, new converter and off she goes.....

Anyone done this?

Re: trans-plant (get it :D)

"There's a combo of parts that work together that form up the "calibration". It's more than just the Valve Body. You should swap all of them as a group. If your Ty trans is truly a LHM, and the Blazer trans is a 88-92 4WD, the internal differences of the clutches and gear-train are minimal.. Contrary to what is believed here, it's mostly the calibration that makes a SyTy trans what it is. Which is contained in the following parts:

  • Valve body.
  • Valve body separator plate.
  • 2nd gear servo, housing and springs. (Look at the pin for signs of grinding, or ID bands. The pin is used to set band clearance. If in doubt, use the pin that is in the trans, and transfer the piston and springs to the pin.)
  • Governor.
  • Boost valve, PR spring. (In pump. Can be changed with pump in trans).

I think that's everything in the calibration." From DaveP

Thats good info. I always had a feeling the clutches, bands, and steels were the same.

Dave is correct. If I were you though, going through the hassle of "transplanting" everything doesn't make whole lot of sense IMO. If it were me, I'd spend a few bucks on building the SYTY unit. :2cents:

Boost valve, PR spring. (In pump. Can be changed with pump in trans).

These parts all can be changed from the outside or from dropping the pan. If you change one part, change all of them. You may have a different governor for your motor, so swap that. You could also use a slightly larger .500 Boost valve.

Also what year transmission is the Blazer 700r4? What are you expecting from this transmission, temporary while you fix the other transmission or are you hoping it will last?

Another member in the UK is on a budget so it's a struggle.

I guess we are both hoping that the trans will last. Having never done this before, is there a guide? Should I get an ATM manual for the 700R4?

I/we/he plan on dropping the trans pan and replacing the valve body and doing what else you suggested.

The Blazer was a 92/93 I think. Does it make a big difference?

92-3 is fine. I am not an expert on the 700's but their are some differences in the earlier ones that would affect compatibility.

I don't know if you need a manual to do them. I am sure you could find the diagrams. Even the parts illustration diagram is probably good enough on SyTyCD ROM. The only thing you really need is the check ball locations. (that might even be in that manual)

The boost valve can tricky if you have never done one before (I screwed it up the first time I did it)

The boost valve goes like this:

Re: trans-plant (get it :D)

Thanks for the tips guys.

Would anyone be able to give me a walkthrough of what to do - most of the parts mentioned I am unfamiliar with.

Valve body. - swapping it in
Valve body separator plate keeping the stock ty one
2nd gear servo, housing and springs. (Look at the pin for signs of grinding, or ID bands. The pin is used to set band clearance. If in doubt, use the pin that is in the trans, and transfer the piston and springs to the pin.) - from the stock Ty VB going into the new one unless they are the same
Governor. - anyone got any pics?
Boost valve, PR spring. (In pump. Can be changed with pump in trans). Matt, where do those go?

New trans filter, fluid and pan gasket. Do I need any internal seals for the work I propose to do?

Thanks,

Mark

Re: trans-plant (get it :D)

This is where the Boost valve goes..

The 2-4 servo you are talking about is behind that round cap on the rt side of the tranny. There is a snap ring in there then everything just pulls out. I've done both of these mods on several vehicles with no prior tranny experience and I've had 0 issues. Just pay attention to how everything comes out and put it back in exactly the same way.

Re: trans-plant (get it :D)

Thanks Matt - that helps. It doesn't seem like there's that much to do and I found the TCI kist with the upgraded bost valve and parts I need.

Looks doable.
