Transmission Died! HELP!

So my transmission was rebuilt in 2003 by a company called Dynotech performance. I didn't have it done, the previous owner did.

The company left Manville, NJ so I can't go back to them, which leaves me stranded...I don't know of any shops near my area (Mt. Olive, NJ) that have any reputable sy/ty transmission experiance.

Here's the run-down of the problem... I put it in drive, has a hard time getting out of first gear... finally it jerks into 2nd.... then has the same problem, then jerks into 3rd... and so on.... when I go to slow down... it has a similar problem with down-shifting. So my diagnosis is that it's shot. It didnt gradually happen, it just randomly happened today. I wasn't beating on it... so it puzzles the hell out of me.

A few questions... 1) does anyone know a place I can take the phoon to get it rebuilt who has worked on these trucks before that's kinda local?

2) if a rebuild is not an option, where can I buy a new Sy/Ty 700r4? (Ive been told these are different than just a regular 700r4...I don't know the differences though...) Preferrably one that is a better, more durable one than the stocker...

3) does anyone have any advice about getting this trans rebuilt? and certain things to look for, certain differences between rebuilding a regular jimmy/bravada/blazer vs. a Typhoon or syclone, or any helpful info at all? This is my daily truck so I need to get it fixed quickly but I need it done right.

So for now I'll just wait around for some replies... I searched around these forums but couldnt find any transmission information, just info on swapping to a manual trans...which I'm not doing... And I'm gunna go get my Jackstands out of the garage for the first time in about the 7 months I've owned this truck without any problems. (is that a record for a Typhoon being off jackstands? :p )

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

First thing I'd check is your TV cable adjustment. What you're describing is exactally what the trans will do if the cable is out of adjustment.
The transmission thinks that you're givving it a lot more throttle then you actually are so it shifts at a much higher point. Downshifting is also very abrupt if it's out of adjustment.

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

few suggestions for shops in the general area..

There is Level 10, http://www.levelten.com/
some like them, some hate them.. they aren't cheap but they are performance based and if you are lucky might even give you a warrentee

There are a few local transmissions shops/guys that I've dealt with in the past, never on a 700r4 for a syty though.. would I suggest any of them, possibly as long as they are willing to listen to what you tell them and use the syty specific parts.

As for the TV cable adjustment search on here for info on how to do so

good luck, by the way I'm the guy in stanhope with a sy and a ty..

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

The bracket on the trans pan works loose - check it is tight first. Felt like a new trans when I did that.

Good luck. Are you doing mods to it? Just get a 4L80E if you are even thinking about it.....

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

ok, so the consensus accross the board is that the problem is most likely my TV cable adjustment. I looked around and saw a diagram on how to do this... Unfortunately, since I am VERY new to doing things myself... I have NO idea where this D shaped button is... Can someone explain this one to me as if they were writing a book called "adjusting the TV cable on your Sy/Ty for dummies" Pics would be nice too...

Also, the truck usually only had the problem with first gear when cold, and getting into OD (sometimes it shifted at 50mph and sometimes althe way up at 55-57mph) and now it just went asshole on me... If this doesnt fix the problem, I'll just take it to a shop around here and see what's up with it. So, if no one mentiones the governor...then just leave, I presume?

is it driveable at the moment? would you be able to make a trip to stanhope from mt olive?

if it isn't freezing cold this weekend I could probably adjust it for you and see if that is the problem.

Yes, actually it is driveable...if I warm it up... I'm available this weekend after 7 though...friggn work... =\

I'm also available all day tomorrow (friday) though, if you have time...

I'd actually like to see someone else who knows sy's and ty's look at it so that I at least know what it consists of... I sadly don't know my truck too well...which might cause the demise of it if I don't learn quickly...

Where in stanhope are ya? I'll mapquest you... pm me... or we can meet up somewhere if that'l be easier.... I live right next to the ITC mall... so directions should be easy to find to get to you...

Call me from under the hood of your Ty. I'll walk you through TV cable adjustment.

Its so easy Renz could probably do it.

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

Well, fixing the TV cable did help the problem a whole lot (Thanks Eric!), now I'll just add the trans fluid and the lubeguard and see how it goes... I'll post up a video of anything that might be out of the ordinary to give everyone a better idea of whats going on...

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

yeah the cable was way loose, not sure if it was adjusted that way or if the plastic teeth are wearing down..

we drove it around for a few and it definately didn't shift in all the right places.. it seemed to shift late randomly, i suggested he do fluid filter and see if it gets better, if not swing by a local tranny place and see what they say..

the truck has lots of work done to it, its an ATR catalog like alot of other sytys.. 7th injector, atr turbo, downpipe, aux cooler, larger IC, atr exhaust... etc.. etc.. etc..

He has HIDs in it that look quite nice too.

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

if you suspect the tv cable is slipping, a hose clamp behind the adjuster will stop it from moving.

Re: Transmission Died! HELP!

my trans was doing the same . posted problem on this board and was advised to clean the governor. trans shifted fine after. took about 45min. to an hour to do. do a search and you can get the procedure. also dynatech is now in new york, i think on long island. pull up their website for new phone and address.
