Re: Triple Chrome Plated Upper Intakes (pics)

Just an add-on for our trucks. I already had the intake piping plated. My upper was painted Chrysler Industrial Red (the color you see on the brakets) but the paint doesnt hold up to solvents. Went out on a limb and figured I'd try and do it like whitetyphoon.com . Renz was gracious enough to give me a good deal on some of his semi-polished spares and patient enough to wait for my cores. took almost two months to get em right at a cost of $550 for the plating (for both). I understood the difficulty of the process and jumped on it. I actually expected it to cost that much for each even though Renz already smoothed em out for me ( saved prep labor costs )

Come on now... We all know it isn't really a GM without a little duct tape ;)

Excellent, that's how I want mine to look. Mine's getting close, I don't have a chrome Upper, but I do have the Chrome Powermaster, Chrome Valve covers & getting everything cleaned up. I'm not running the extended oil fill tube on mine anymore, I'm running dual valve cover breathers instead, it cleaned it up a little more than having that big black tube sticking up. How much for the 2nd chrome Upper??????????????????? I need one.

The duct tape you refer to is actually adhesive backed foil lined fiberglass heat wrap. The driver side KB header arches up and bakes everything near by. The truck has been sitting for a while and the sticky stuff on the back just gave way. Yeah, Ive still got some tidying up to do.

The second intake has already been installed on my wife's Ty. Sorry.

I was being semi sarcastic about that, I figured you had a plan for it. I'm broke anyway. I need to quit modding mine & start driving it, I've had the SY for 5 month's now & only put about 200 miles on it. I've spent the rest of the time modding it. I'm a certified modahaulic.

That is a sweet setup you have there though.

Really nice.
I didn't know you could triple chrome plate aluminum?

Aluminum is dipped in zincate before the nickel or copper flash plate stage.

As he said, zinc is applied first. As it was explained to me by the place here in Houston that did it, "aluminum was never intended to be chromed...". Hence, the zinc. However, one of the intakes had a problem getting the zinc to stick in one spot on the top. I had to be redone about 4 times before it actually took. They suspect that there may have been an impurity in the aluminum (possibly magnesium) that caused the prob. I'm so glad that I got a quote in writing because they cerctainly put more work into it than originally anticipated and probably actually lost money on the deal when the extra labor is taken into consideration.

My engine (as most of your) looks good on a stand but looks dingy once its dropped in the hole. I'd hoped that shining it up would offset it a bit

I chose chrome over polished surfaces due to the continuous maintenance required to keep it looking good. My polished rims are a pinta and they are basically flat and easier to get to.

If anyone has a spare stock fuel rail laying around, I need one for the other truck. Drop me a line if you want to work something out. In fact, send me yours and I'll get it plated for free if youre interested.

Thanks for the positive feedback ;-)

Looks good! Got any close-ups of the Syclone script?

Does chrome affect the gasket mating surfaces (i.e, do you have to scuff them up)? Is the lower intake chromed?

$550 for both sounds like a deal!

Re: Triple Chrome Plated Upper Intakes (pics)

The Syclone script is nothing to marvel over. Just shinier. I'm working on getting Typhoon plates to bond over it as we speak. Once I have them and get them plated I plan to do something that will be original and picture worthy. Renz knows what I mean (I think). I'm sending him a core back that was detailed the same way. I'll keep you posted.
