Truck Smoking

I just rebuilt my entire motor and had the turbo rebuilt also. When I start it sometimes I get a large puff of smoke. I do not see anything while driving or when I get on the gas. I pull back in the driveway and let it idle and rev the engine and it smokes. I checked all of the plugs and there is no sign of it burining oil in the cylinders. Is the only possible other place the turbo. The only thing the turbo guy said was the shaft was worn but still useable. I have a warranty on the turbo and was seeing if anyone has any other suggestions.

what size is your oil drain hose? kinked at all?

did you replace the valve stem seals?

Its, a stock drain, not kinked. I did replace the valve seals when I did the motor, I figured if it were those I might see something on the spark plugs. Im new at this and built the motor with the help of my dad.

Check the inlet before and after the turbo for any oil. If you have oil before, then I would look at valve seals or rings not sealing yet. If you don't have oil before the turbo, but have oil after the turbo than you may be looking at a turbo overhaul.

If you rebuilt or had the heads worked on with the motor, then valve guides is my guess. I have seen a lot of Mustang guys get heads rebuilt and the machine shop use cheap generic chinese valve guides that aren't worth a crap and end up with an otherwise inexplicable smoke puff on start up.

IMHO That amount of smoke may not show up anywhere. Based on your description it's either valve guides, seals or both. If actual oil consumption is nill I wouldn't worry about it unless the machine shop want's to pay to R&R the heads. Seals can be replaced with the heads on.
