Tune up and Top end cleaner last night, now Idle is high

I ran a can of top end cleaner, man did that smoke! Then we did an oil change and tune up, another bitch! Anyway as of today the idle is higher, sitting in park its a little of 1grand and I also keep throwing a check engine light, is this because some of the topend cleaner is still in the motor? On another note we found out that the drain plug was stripped and the past owner rigged it up so I guess and new oil pan is next, its all dented anyway. But as of now the idle is the question.

High idle is usually a vaccum leak. Go to the "tech articles section" and do Jesse's bicycle tire tube trick. Where ever a leak is at, you'll find it. You may have blown out something when you took it out and "opened it up" so to speak. Seems like common culprits are one of the seals in the two piece manifold setup or a vaccum line. Visual inspection may reveal something you "leaned on" when you were doing a tuneup. Count the flashes of the check engine light to see what it is. Do the paper clip deal for getting the codes. If you don't know how to do this, do a quick search or go to sportsmachines.com and find out how to do it. We might be able to help more when you come back with the code it set.

have fun with the oil pan, you pretty much have to yank the motor, so order jeffs motor mounts and do them while you there, I have the part numbers for the oil pan and gasket if you need them. Ken

Thanks,

Blake the engine light comes on only while in idle, then as soon as I begin to drive it shuts off. Thats why I thought it was some Top End cleaner left over. I will try what you said, I know I need to replace the vaccuum lines anyway, I was trying to hold out for the kit. I am also gonna try to run a DM tonight or this weekend, when ever 92blacktyphoon is free, you hear that Brian.

Pull the code that the ECM is setting. Did you remove a vacuum line so the TEC could be sucked into the engine? Did you re-attach it? Did you damage a vacuum line during this process? Did your tune up include checking the timing? Did you adjust the timing? Did you re-connect the ESC connector?

The oil pan will drop right off if you pull the front diff which I have done and would rather do if changing the oil pan is the only thing I was doing. Don't get me wrong it's not easy pullin the diff either. :) :)

Truckless. For now.
did you pull your engine codes? i ran the TEC in October, and thought all was fine, then it set a code 35 during idle only, and my truck was idleing right at a grand. Code 35 is the code for the IAC. Like was said, you could just have a vacuum leak. My IAC was on the way out before I ran the TEC, but it's something to check as well.

Another possiblity is TEC let some dirt loose, causing IAC to stick open some. I would remove TB, and spray some good carb cleaner in the IAC passages.

I didnt remove any lines, I had the spray cleaner so I just sprayed it in the Throttle Body. We reconnected everything. I never checked the timing. I guess thats next. This is all new to me guys, thanks for the help.

it was all new to me as well. if you have to remove the IAC at any point, get an 1-1/4 socket and grind it down. ;) but hopefully you won't have to do that.

I've had the same thing happen to me. More than likely you have a vacuum leak. You might even have several like me. lol Anyways, definatley check what code you're setting off. If it's a code 35, I'd spend some time checking every vacuum line. It could be as simple as one of the fittings not being tight enough. I'd also check your vecuum check valves. Hope this helps.

I got a vacuum diagram so I will be picking up hose tonight and changing every line. I did throw a code 35 this morning. Now is that the IAC or could it be a vacuum leak or both? I see difference in opinion here. Thanks

Code 35 is for the IAC according to a GM trouble code manual. However, I've noticed on here that some have had a vacuum leak set the code. A Mechanic friend of mine that works on Porsches, Jags and stuff, said only something electrical will throw a code. A vacuum leak won't. Meaning, that either your IAC is stuck, or it's just not getting any current which causes it to set the code.

I would have redone my vacuum lines first because it's cheaper than a new IAC, but I have an aftermarket hood, so all my diagrams have disappeared. A new Delco IAC will run you about $70 , depending on where you get it from. A replacement Wells unit from Autozone will cost around $40.

I am gonna give the vacuum lines a try then go from there. Like it was said above, maybe the TEC loosened up some dirt and got it jammed up. Tonight we will see.

cool deal. let me know what you find, because i had the same prob and replaced the IAC. my high idle and engine code is gone, but i may have some vac probs too, so I'd like to know if that would have fixed it.

that's not true. take off the vacuum line to your FPR, and get on the gas. it will throw a code.
