I have to figure something out. I would like to go down there with both, but the hs would probably get more attenchin
So, I broke my shock mounts a lonnng tiome ago and never fixed them. The ice race finished them off so im forced to fix them now.
I bought a new set of belltech shocks to fit the lowered truck. They should be plenty for the truck. The issue was the mount itself. I decided rather than ****ing off in a junk yard and getting what are probably equally shitty mounts I would just make what I had work. I do this kind of work alot and down document it in any way so I thought I would show off the extreme care and craftsmanship that goes into this truck on a daily basis.
so, here you can see the shackle with the shock mount coming off the side of it. on this shock mount the collar thing from the original shock remains (which is what the vise grips are clamped to). here you can somewhat grasp the issue. The bolt in which the shock mounts to has broken off clean with the edge of the shock collar.
Here I have removed the shock collar. I wasnt sure where to go with this at first. I was hoping I could back the bold out of the shackle somehow, but I wasnt able to get anywhere with that.
I decided to go another direction with it, and cut off about a half inch
I concluded that the force needed to keep the shock on the mount was minimal. after all ive driven it for about a year now and they stayed on until I started beating on them. I decided just about any bolt would be able to hold up.
after racing we noticed my turbo was jiggling more than usual. After getting home I noticed that 2 of the flange bolts had become loose. I put them back together with some loc-tite. Everything else on the truck seems good. I beat it to death these last 2 weeks and it seems fine thus far.
it was a good time, coarse was a little slicker than other times, but still fun.
Thats what Im thnking. they weigh about 500 lbs less than I do. They are also running alot better tire than I am. After some research I found that the wider tires are better for ice racing, adn im running a set of 195's. that might also have something to do with it. The tires im on right now are actually borrowed tires, so next year I'll likely buy a new set and use what ive learned when making a selection.
still managed to beat everythign but those ravs though, including subi's, an evo, audi's and awd vw's
the loc tite im not sure on, im going to see what it does. keep an eye on it sort of thing. if it does it again ill step it up
alright, so I got the exhaust done. I am hoping the local state cops will be less upset with me now.
This is what I had to start with
after a short time with the plasma cutter
started lining up where I wanted it
get into teh swing of things, forget to take construction pictures. This is after being welded up and the 'basecoat' of paint applied
on the truck
with the fender back on, with some modifications
I apparintly forgot to take any pictures of it with the wheel well in, but that took a notch to make fit on the side. Pipe portrudes about a half inch into the wheel well so, I thnk it will be fine.
The sound isn't a whole lot quieter, but the tone is lower, and it seems to cruise a bit less loudly. kicks up dust.
oh yea thats no a prob, I cut the pipe off of them right after I got them and they've just been sitting next to my bench. Organize a spring BBQ and ill bring them down with me
Fenders, eh they aren't that sharp. if onlookers start getting tangled up in them ill deal with it then.
did some tuning on it last night, which its needed ever since I did all of the fuel system changes. It helped, and its running strong on about 14psi right now, which is all the winter tires can seem to stand. Had a hard time with long term fuel trims. Usually they aren't anything you have to worry about because there is no o2 sensor for the pcm to read from, and im in the no-feedback club when it comes to that but for some reason it was still coming up with long term trims. it took a while to get rid of that...but its fixed now.
Lost another fuel pump. While taking the sendin unit out I ripped a ground wire out of the connector going out of the tank, and upon further inspection I saw one of the power wires (the one powering the bad pump) was also not set in all that well. I took the pins out of the connector, recrimped them and soldered them and put it back in with just the one pump. I am hoping to have it replaced by the end of the week.
I pulled about 35 lbs off the front end over the last couple days. unfortunetly I also poked a hole in my radiator...ill replace that tomorrow.
I finally found an actual set of patching slicks. M/T 29x9x15's, all of them are like new. I mounted them and just had to take a drive even with the leaky rad, could feel a huge improvement. I'll work on some pics
Back to the bricks was literally its first drive anywhere besides down own road. I hadn't even driven it far enough to get to a gas station yet. So at that point it wasn't running all that great...had a fueling and maf issue, and the weak trans in it still. I've hammered out alot of my issues over the winter, and as far as I can tell it's ready to go, minus 1 fuel pump.
we got started late, and on the way down we lost a wheel on the trailer.
Lucky for me the autozone that it brokedown near had a handy resource in it, 13pelle.
He was there buying some junk for a truck, we followed him back to his house and fixed the wheel bearing.
4 hours later, we were back on the road...Track closed at 5 and we rolled in at about 3:30.
Got teched.
Not happy about me not having a battery kill switch (my bad, now on my list to fix)
Not happy about my seat not being mounted to the roll bar, but they didnt seam to think it was actually part of the safety deal, he just wanted to talk about it.
got unloaded, hit the grid at 4 o'clock. Get in line, and sit. Car in front of me puts some stripes down the track with his trans. 20 minutes later I got a first run. 11.40 @ 121 @ 14psi with a 2.1 60 foot. I couldn't get it to spool at all on the line.
Second run, I got about 5 psi off the line and ran an 11.24 @ 127 with a 1.996 60ft @ 15psi.
third run was a tuning attempt 11.90 @ 127 with a 2.2 60ft @ 18 psi...breaking up.
track closed.
Got back and looked at the logs...we have some ideas on how to get it to spool better. I've had it spool great on the street before but...my fuel trims were messing with me. I killed them and have to now do some re-tuning. I am hoping to get these issues fixed at get it back to a local track next weekend. with any luck I can get it to launch like it should, and get it to hold 18 psi not runing pig rich down the track.
