Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

missed me? must be someone else

we there late, it was a neat little show. that was a little over an hour. A buddy of mine made that and i thought it was neat. he picked the song to match the truck...

I spend alot of time explaining why I built it, why its not a 4.3, and how I figured out how to wire. Kinda fun, although they can never accept that its as fast as it is. I do now have this now though...

Yea, just show that to everyone that says it isn't as fast you say it is...glad the Fiero waited for a second racer too!

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

torque converter is a goofball that my local trans guy built for me. Its a one off with a 700R4 front half and a TH400 backhalf. I believe it was a 9 inch, and that it was supposed to stal around 2600 rpm...which it does. Kinda sucks, with that low an rpm on the line it takes a 30 shot to spool the turbo (as I did in that vid)

That fiero is part of what inspired me to build the blazer with the 3800. He's run 11.1@132 rowing a cobalt 5 speed in that car. stock motor, cam, headgaskets, everything...just valve springs, head studs and injectors (and turbo (hx35 off a diesel))

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

That fiero represents the cheapest and fastest setup I know of. Fiero/l76 3800/super clutch/cavi-cobalt trans/E85=mid 130's trap speeds for 3-5 grand

Did another autox this weekend. I'll post a video or two later once they get uploaded.

the truck did well, with the second fastest time overall. I was having some brake issues though, most of them my own fault. the day before the autox I noticed that my brakes were gone on the inboard pad on the driver side, probably due to a sticking caliper. I didn't have time for new pads so I just threw a single autozone pad in.

Big mistake...

I kept locking up my pass side brakes and put a flat spot in my tire. I can probably get away with swapping that tire to the back and use it the rest of the season but it still sucked.

After riding in a few of the faster cars I decided that even when my brakes were working great I'm lacking. Places I need to improve...and the solutions I have to them

Pedal feel - First thing Im going to try is to replace all my rubber lines with steel braded lines. This will be tricky given my next issue

Overal braking force - The truck stops ok, but faced with the need to buy new pads I know I can get some even more badass pads, and increase front braking by a few percent. I am sad to report that my rear brakes seem to completly suck ass evan after completly re-building them. This means that my investment in them of 35 dollars is a total loss. I will get a set of disk brakes and the proportioning valve off of a newer blazer and swap them in. hopefully I can get better braking with them.

Other than that the truck did well, I am still working towards a sway bar up front, although at this autox it wasn't as big of a deal as the braking so thats where Im going to start.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Dammit, not I want a freaking Fiero!

Yea, sounds like you need the brakes more than the sway bar. Hope the rear discs make enough of an improvement for you.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

fuel filter clogged. it happened litterally overnight. I use a stock gm filter for flex fuel. 4001 is the PN i think.

decided to do a brake conversion from an 01 blazer I found at a local yard. I ended up spending more that I had hoped.

$110-all calipers, hardware, rotors, pads, mounting stuff, spindles, cv axles
$65 - new mounting brackets for rear (old pins froze in bracket)
$45 - Hawk hps rear pads
$65 - Hawk Heavy duty crazy truck brakes (best I could get)
$120- Goodridge stainless steel brake lines front/back

This is what I was starting with, and it really worked pretty well.

ripped apart...I also ended up changing some ball joints while I was in there. They were a little loose.

IMG_20130913_193707_841_zps88af4ed1.jpg

new pads/brakes installed. I reused the junk yard rotors. Also, my speed bleeders fit in the front. Unfortunetly my stainless lines did not...ima talk to them on monday. I did buy new rubber ones though, as they were only 10.99 and mine were ****ed.

I could not get the upper bolt to budge at all other than spin. I used a floor jack to bend the backing plate up and sawzalled the braket off at the wheel cylinder mount.

IMG_20130914_185537_011_zps06defa0c.jpg

So this is where things got bad.

I discovered that the setup did not fit at all. it was about an inch too far outboard, and the rotor was hitting it far before it was seating on the flange. I weighed my options, and came out with this.

IMG_20130914_192709_884_zpsa59a8483.jpg

I cut my bracket in almsot half, leaving 3 mounting holes. I also cut off anything that wasnt flat.

IMG_20130914_193013_912_zpsd514fbbb.jpg

I then mounted it on the backside of the flange (first drilling a hole, as there were only three to start with. I did this by bolting in on the front, and useing the hole in the bracket as a guide.)

IMG_20130914_162356_619_zpsd98437e6.jpg

Everything then lined up correctly. It was amazing.

for the prop valve I did some reasearce and came up with a few things. I decided to do the older trick and take the front bolt thing off the front, and remove the spring and valve thing. I then had to seal the hole that was in the front bolt, because it now leaked fluid for some reason. It looked like this.

After a few miles of hard stops to wear the rusted, butt-****ed rotors in, it turns out they are all straight and great. They seem to be wearing pretty evenly, and the braking is much better than before.

I would say I picked up about 15% increased braking. The biggest thing though so far is the way the brakes come on. they are much more positive in response, and they dont lock up as unpredictably. I ran an auto x today and they felt wayyyy better then before. I am excited for my new lines up front to come in.

I love this thread.

Your truck looks like it is one step away from having a Mr Fusion in the rear and a flux capacitor

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

I was unfortunetly unable to attend that event.

Sunday was alright, and I went to the track with my dad and his car. I came in off the street and turned out a 10.50. I goofed with the tune a bit and made another pass in the 10.80's...put i tback and turned up the boost.

I launched hard on 28 psi and blew a coupler almost immedietly, although I still managed a 1.58 60'. Fist time the truck had ever launched that hard and not spun. Buncha shit that was nestled in the truck went tumbling out. It was neat.

Unfortunelty My coupler got ripped on its way off and I have to get a new one (already ordered) My real issue was the clamp holding it on was known junk. My own fault on this one.

I am hoping to go back to do a little better. My 10.50 was done on lower boost, and it shows in the mph. I have trapped in the 134's before, I am hoping to do that with my newer improvered launch, although even that still needs alot of work.

I'm going to play with with timing to get my turbo to spool faster. I will update with results.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

so, update

I flipped the truck month ago or so.

pics/vid

flipped_zpsf9107709.jpg

truck seems fine, even with the solid mounts. nothing seems cracked or bent. drives fine, biggest loss was the gas door. They flipped it back over and towed it into the pits. I started it, and drove it home.

I also broke the only side mirror so I ended up getting a set of elephant ears.

in the now, I am prepairing for winter. I got my hands on a set of tires.

I am having an issue that I am going to attack before Christmas. I believe that my valve springs are starting to fatigue. I seem to have developed a soft limiter at 6100rpm where the truck stops making power and hangs there for a couple seconds, and then surges to about 6400. afr's stay good, and it doesn't miss at all, it just stops making power. I believe it is valve float. Springs might only have 12-15k miles on them, but highway rpm is 3500. Also, bind on them is like 600 lift and in running 580 or something so...I may be getting a better set.
